Lucie

I thought we had narrowed it down to just four names, but my husband doesn't really want to let go of Lucy.

I do like it, but think it is a bit overdone and the bad publicity the name got last year is still on my mind, even though I know there are lots of other associations.

For some reason I like Lucie a lot better and could choose it more easily than Lucy. Is it a bad idea because it will cause confusion or is it bearable to say "Lucie, ends in "ie"" every time?

I guess we'd have a similar problem with Keira anyway, which is also on our list. My guess is that with Keira people are expecting one of three/four spellings, though (Keira, Kiera, Ciara, Kira) whereas with Lucy they will expect Lucy and not Lucie.

Does anyone have a popular name that is usually spelled one way with a slightly different spelling (e.g. Hollie instead of Holly, Elinor instead of Eleanor, Elly instead of Ellie)? Was it annoying or not a big problem?

The other ones are Ruby, Rosalind, Keira, Annabel and my favorite would be Ruby Rosalind at the moment. My husband's are Keira Rose and Lucy Rosalind.

I like Lucie more than Lucy. I know a couple of Lucinda’s and one goes by Luci which I also like. Lucia has a few pronunciations itself
so I wouldn’t choose this just so I could avoid the y!

Lucy is such a classic name.
Love everything about it, St Lucy's day was yesterday and marked the turning point where the evenings start to get lighter. (Even though the mornings continue to get darker for a little longer).
There's the connection to Wordsworth's gorgeous "Lucy" poems. Lucy Van Pelt in peanuts and Lucy in Beatrix Potter.

Rosalind is also beautiful.

I think Ruby is very of the moment and will become dated.

Ruby won't become dated - my great aunt was Ruby, I know another in their 30s, and a 2 year old one too, it's a classic and timeless name that goes in and out of popularity but it's hardly just an of the moment kind of name like say Luna or Ottilie.

Enterthedragonqueen · 21/12/2024 19:31

How about Lucia instead if you don't want to use Lucy.

twinkletoesimnot · 21/12/2024 19:30

How about Lucinda and then calling her Lucy for short?

stylingItUp · 21/12/2024 16:28

Don't do it.

She'll have to spend life time spelling it and correcting people which is annoying to her, annoying to them and a waste of the short time we have on this earth.

People will judge her (and you) for having an affection as a spelling. Sorry to say this kind of "unique" spelling of names (Harleigh, Aimee, Emilee) is very indicative of working classes / uneducated / poverty.

Unless she grows up in a world where all CVs are blind marked, people do form an assessment of someone based on their name. It might be unpleasant but its a fact of life that a woman called Catherine Lavinia Fetherstonehaugh is far more likely to get an interview for the job in the art gallery than Billee Bobee Brown.

Lucie is a legitimate spelling. I know two people with this name. It's not like it's made up or "trendeigh".

I wouldn't worry about Letby either, Rose has become a common name again and nobody thinks of West. It's just a normal, pretty name. Like Rose, Lucy/Lucie is classic enough to not be affected by this.

Absolutely!
I don’t ever think of vile Letby or West
Lucy and Rose are lovely names.

I'm a Lucie. It has honestly never bothered me in the slightest that I have to say 'with an ie' and its certainly not a problem. I actually quite like that it is spelt differently than most people expect it to be.

Same. And it didn’t even cross my mind that my name is the same as a certain nurse.

I hate the name Ruby it's absolutely played out

It's a beautiful name but not modern!
Was popular with grannies and then again in 2007 when the song came out.

I like Lucie actually and I imagine she will always have to say IE. But so will lots of other people (I know a lot of Hollies for example)

BeaLola · 21/12/2024 13:44

I love Lucie and Lucy

I struggled for ages trying to work out this years negative association so I wouldn't rule it out on that basis

Yeah I wouldn't think of it either

NoCarbsForMe · 21/12/2024 13:49

Lucia lis lovely why not go for that and shorten to lucie?

Or Lucinda or Lucille are both gorgeous names!

BeaLola · 21/12/2024 13:44

Catherine / Kathryn/ Katharine plus Katie / Katy, Kerri / Kerry / Kerrie, Sarah / Sara and many many more are all names with a variety of spellings.

Lucie is nicer IMO than Lucy, go for it

FayCarew · 18/12/2024 22:07

My cat was Lucy, dd spelt it Lucie though. Lovely name. I think once you say with an ie people remember.
Based on a cat's name.

I took DCat to be chipped. I was asked his name, how was it spelt? I spelt it out and it was said as it looked in English. Confused

LittleMissLateForWorkAgain · 17/12/2024 23:38

My cat was Lucy, dd spelt it Lucie though. Lovely name. I think once you say with an ie people remember.

I am Kimberley (mostly known as Kim) and get Kimberly/ Kimberlee etc. So I have to do the Kim ber ley thing a lot.

Depends if you think it will be a pain. Fwiw I love the name Lucy/Lucie

Lucy is lovely. I would choose it if I had another dd. I would go with Lucy over Lucie.

Cadburyscreamegg · 12/12/2024 03:19

I have a name that ends EY but can be spelt without the E and I have to spell it out every time and usually people spell it without but it doesn't bother me or inconvenience me just spelling it out. It takes seconds. And usually people will ask EY or just Y?

Not a big deal. Go with what you prefer.

SnoopySantaPaws · 12/12/2024 02:56

I didn't even think of letby until you mentioned it.

I like Lucie, but she's your baby not mine (sadly for me!!)

I have an -ie name. I only bother correcting people if it's really going to matter, otherwise I really don't care.

I realise I'm swimming up stream, but I don't like
Rosalind or Keira (sorry) Annabelle feels dated.

we have (in our immediate family, but not my kids) Holly (x2), Katie, Emilie & Emily & a Rudy. In the next generation up, I have cousins Tracey Tracy & Tracie (& everytime I have to write their names I have to check which is which. Lorraine & Loraine. And a few other doubles. Absolute no Sharon's though 🤣🤣

DramaAlpaca · 12/12/2024 00:48

I prefer Lucy, tbh. It's neat and simple, without the slight tweeness of Lucie.

I love Ruby Rosalind though, it's gorgeous.

Yellowcakestand · 12/12/2024 00:39

I know 1 Lucy and 2 Lucie's. I like the ie spelling better.

I also have a name that ends in ie where people like to put a y. Doesn't bother me correcting them

Frenchie01 · 12/12/2024 00:09

My daughter is lucie and while I still love it, yes be prepared to be constantly telling people it's ie and also ianything personalised in shops is always Lucy having said that I do still really like the spelling of lucie even after 18 years lol

OolongTeaDrinker · 11/12/2024 23:47

Why not Lucia, nickname Luci or Lucie if you aren’t keen on Lucy?
