It's not unique @Arweni Several people on here have said they know an Ash. It doesn't really matter if they are Ashley-Ash is what they go by. I have known three men who call themselves Ash in the past 4 years

It's not even unusual-it's quite ordinary.

Where on earth did you get the idea that it was unique?

It's not just burnt things, it's a tree. I think it's a good name and is also unisex. For a longer version I know an Ashley (male) and Ashleigh (female) so it works wherever.

I like it, and I'm normally a "use a traditional full name and shorten it for everyday" person. Ash to me is a tree name like Aspen, Hazel, Holly, Laurel, Linden, Rowan, or Willow. I know an Ashley and an Ashten, both women, who go by Ash. I think that both of those "full" names come from surnames and/or place names that have to do with ash trees.

I also like Asher, which is a Hebrew name meaning happy or fortunate/blessed, but it's a different name to me.

It makes me think of Pokemon! Not a bad association though. It’s cute though I prefer a longer name personally so would probably go for Asher. I really dislike Ashley it seems wet and a bit middle aged sounding.

My first thought was like Ash from Pokémon - but that's not a bad thing because I like Pokémon.
I think the name is fine and others have said the younger generation are unlikely to know what an ashtray is or associate the word with fag ash.

I’m not keen. I just think of burnt things and “fag ash”.

I like Asa, which has a similar feel to me.

I quite like it, makes me think of an ash tree rather than cigarettes! I know a few girls that go by Ash, (short for Aisling in their case), but think it's also fine for a boy

I would keep the name but only as short for something else - Ashton, Ashley.

Please don’t set up your kid like this. Think of him as. 25 year old applying for a job.

It’s a very common name in both my DD’s secondary and also my godsons (different) secondary - if kids don’t like their given name and want something gender neutral then they go by ‘Ash’. I don’t mind it and don’t think it would be the worst thing to name your DS.

I think it's a nice name. People may assume it's short for Ashley, but hey, Ashley is one of those names where I think every man I've met called that has been a good bloke!

Sorry no, as its at best a nickname and everyone will always ask him what it's short for.
asher, Ashley, Ashton all fine.

No. Everyone will assume it’s Ashley so he’ll have a lifetime correcting people, and ash just isn’t really something I’d name my kid after.

I prefer Asher, Ashton (not so much but more than Ash), Nash (maybe). All except Asher make mw pull an involuntary meh face.
