Unfortunate name choice

dsandhisname · 10/12/2024 11:30

DS shares his name (first and surname) with a fairly well known person, who unfortunately has disgraced himself since.

I don’t really think I can change DS’s name but wondering if others would. The spelling is a bit different. But the name is identical.

I'm guessing its Connor McGregor as thats a common little boys name.
Don't worry about, it'll blow over. Its actually a very nice name!

Ignore seen your update. Hugh Edwards is a nice name!

DogInATent · 10/12/2024 13:22

Not worth it for Huw/Hugh Edwards. It's common enough.

WitcheryDivine · 10/12/2024 13:21

I wouldn’t change it but I think it was an odd choice to give him the name of someone so high profile in the first place - bit of a hostage to fortune.

Even though the HE thing will be forgotten in detail I can see why you’d be upset at people for years to come meeting your son and thinking - oh like that newsreader, didn’t he end up charged with sex offences? So does he have a middle name? Would you tolerate Huey?

This is who immediately sprang to mind for me. 😂

Poor wean.

Hilarious 😐

Honestly it will all have blown over by the time he’s five - don’t worry xx

Loads of four-year-olds are called Ian/Iain/H from Steps.

Honestly? h? There are boys called H? 😂

@SatansBobbleheadedDashboardOrnament but we didn’t cross post, I updated some time ago. Besides, how many four year olds are called Ian?

DemonicCaveMaggot · 10/12/2024 13:16

I think your DS will be fine. Huw Edwards will be forgotten about in a couple of years.

I met a middle aged gentleman who changed his name because someone else with the same name was convicted of sexual offenses against children. Being about the same age and living in the same area he didn't want any confusion.

Rubbish. Should every woman called Rose, Lucy, Joanna or Maxine change her name?

Who's the Joanna here?

Do people not read threads? Hmm

Has Ian Watkins done something new?

So sorry, I missed your update because I was bothering to reply to your thread.

SatansBobbleheadedDashboardOrnament · 10/12/2024 13:12

It's Ian Watkins, isn't it? And he's an Iain.
If so, I wouldn't change it now. Obviously the name is associated with something horrific, but it's a fairly common name and I wouldn't worry too much. Let him decide when he's older if he brings it up.

Edit: missed your update.

Can’t imagine any four year olds called Gary 😂

That and H from Steps being described as a singer have made this a traumatic thread indeed!

I think the difference is it’s first name and surname, obviously calling your child Rose is fine but I wouldn’t call my daughter Rose West!

Some people are really thick, though.

I remember reading about a woman called Maxine Carr who moved to a new area at a similar time to when Ian Huntley's accomplice had been reported as having been rehomed in a new town - and some of her new neighbours believed that she must be the criminal.

Even though it was well known that the infamous MC had been given a new name and identity; and the innocent woman not only had a distinctive Scottish accent but was also black!

Edited

Maybe they did a REALLY good job with her new identity! Never know these days 😂(sorry, that is a horrible thing to happen to the innocent woman but also has amused me that people are quite that stupid).

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 10/12/2024 13:08

Hugh Edwards will be fine. Edwards is not an unsual last name.

When you first mentioned a celebrity who had 'disgraced himself', my first thought was an ex-footballer who sells crisps - and that time when he slid across the pitch on his bottom with a horrified look on his face!

Granted GL can be extremely annoying, but I don't think he's actually done anything criminal or horribly shameful.

leafybrew · 10/12/2024 12:59

hehe I had assumed it was Russell Brand Confused

Serial killer of men, was she in Bristol somewhere?

But anyway this isn’t a serial killer, it’s huw Edwards. Although we have the Hugh spelling!

Oh don't change it, it's a lovely name. And apart from the different spelling, I can't imagine anyone making the association when he's older.

ShaggyPutItOnWhatAPongItGaveHimTheShakesNShivers · 10/12/2024 12:50

ComtesseDeSpair · 10/12/2024 12:20

How old is DS? The only concern I’d have around sharing a name with a high profile offender is the possibility of mistaken identity and being targeted by idiotic vigilantes. If DS is 3 then there’s not much chance of him being mistaken for the real whoever it is; and unless we’re talking really high profile serial killer etc, by the time he’s an adult I doubt anyone is going to remember some minor celebrity who “disgraced themselves.”

What's H from Steps done????

I was going to say the same: granted he was known from the start as H, but it doesn't seem to have affected him too much.

Except for some horrified confusion at first, probably - but he and his evil namesake are/were both Welsh singers of the same generation; whereas I presume your DS is much, much younger than the disgraced celeb, and is unlikely to have much else in common apart from the name?

Mostlyoblivious · 10/12/2024 12:37

Needmorelego · 10/12/2024 12:33

@Mostlyoblivious that was the name I had to Google. Then I was "oh yes I remember" and also remembered the issues H from Steps originally had by having the same name.
But the fact I had to Google shows how quickly people do forget news stories.

I thought it was a niche call from the pp (was a fan of LP). You’re spot on, it’s not something to be too concerned
