Middle name for Sonny?

Hello all, everyone has been so helpful I thought I would ask opinions on another name. Originally we had decided on Benjamin (nn Benji) but now considering Sonny. Which does everyone prefer? I love Sonny but not sure if it’s a bit nicknamey?

We have also considered ‘Kit’ as a middle name, but open to suggestions. I personally like one syllable names for middle names…

Boys names are so hard!!!

I think Benjamin sonny is nice. If you did use sonny as a first name I would use a classic middle name that can be shortened like Alexander, Joseph, Thomas , Matthew - in case as he's older he would prefer to go by Alex, Tom, Joe etc

Marcipex · 10/12/2024 15:01

I find Sonny very infantilising on an adult. If you decide to use it, give him a classic name to fall back on when he’s older.
Ditto Junior.
Benjamin is a nice name.

MumonabikeE5 · 10/12/2024 15:00

Kit is short for Christopher, so if you agree with PP about classic name that would be a good option.

but I think Sonny/Sunny is a great name. But you don’t need to use it as a formal name to use it as a daily name.

Sonny is very cute and will suit a child, I'm not sure it'll age so well.
Benjamin Kit is a great name.

Why not???? Anyone who is qualified and has experience/knowledge can be prime minister, president or anything they want to be!! Is there a law I missed to say you have to have a certain name to do a certain job??

Totally agree

This should become an old fashioned view now with more people choosing to call their children more unusual names! If anything it makes someone more memorable when applying for jobs!

The old primeminsiter or plumber test, Sonny is never going to be PM, Ben/Benjamin could be either.

Sonny is not remotely comparable to dignified names like James or John. It's a juvenile diminutive.

He won't be a cute toddler forever. Give him an aspirational name he can use for life.

John is sooooo boring & dull as anything (My DH name) nothing aspirational about it whatsoever...nor James. If I hear names like that I just think zzzzzzz

More unusual names are more inspiring IMO

CookieMonster28 · 10/12/2024 14:37

I vote Sonny

Benjamin is boring!

Jim

My thought too!

I'm not mad on Sonny, but it's not my child.

I also dislike sonny as a given name. If you are attached to it as a nn then I'd absolutely choose one the the PP mentioned full names, eg Harrison.
Or Benson? Uncommon but not weird and could be ben, benny, Benji or sonny

Dignified ....... there are plenty of dignified Sonny's in the world as I'm sure there are hundreds of undignified Johns.... each person is an individual!!

Benjamin is fine. Please please don't call your son "Sonny." At least half the people on this thread think it's dreadful - do you want that for your child?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the name Sonny it's all personal choice but there are plenty of Sonny's in the world.... there is nothing wrong with having a unique name it's like telling people not to call there son James or John

I have a Sonny age 11 middle name Jude and it suits him and his personality beautifully

So he is a sunny dude, then? Grin

Beats me. We don't speak. The other kid is "Griffin." 🙄

<<whispers: I quite like Griffin ! >>

Again, not one I’d use but at least it’s a creature and quite a fun one.

Calliopespa · 10/12/2024 12:27

BettyBardMacDonald · 10/12/2024 11:28

My neighbour's son is Garrison.

This happens when people like a sound and don’t think about meaning. The mum is probably blissfully unaware.

She probably tried to jazz up Harrison …

ETA I tend to be exceedingly unfiltered on name threads, but that’s a good example of why …

Sonny isn’t my type of name, but I can see why people might like it, and I like Sonny Jude actually. I guess he could always revert to Jude if he outgrows Sonny.
