Avoiding down-market spellings and masculine names. Thanks x

I love it, it's a bit 80s in a really great way. Naomi Rose?

RSavernake · 21/12/2024 18:21

I like it a lot. I agree that a one syllable name would work best.
Naomi Faye sounds nice I think.

Combustivechicken · 14/12/2024 13:52

Love it. Especially with a one syllable middle name - Jane, Grace, Kate, Rose.

It’s not used much but isnt too out there and is easy to spell. One of the two I know is half Japanese and it was chosen as a name that worked well in UK and Japan. Hers is pronounced Nowmi

bumblenbean · 14/12/2024 13:45

I love Naomi! Oddly it didn't occur to me as an option when I had DD but if I had another it would def be a top contender, and it's quite unusual these days.

We've added Alice, Jane and Iris to our list. Interesting you've mentioned Iris as that was the first one that came to mind.

Are you saying it Nay-oh-mi or nay-u-mi or ni-o-mi?

Edited

Nay-oh-mi though ni-o-mi is lovely as well and I wouldn't be bothered.

As someone called Naomi I think it’s an excellent name 😀It can be pronounced in a variety of ways (in fact my parents pronounce it differently to how I do) but weirdly I don’t mind this as long as it’s recognisable. However I do get annoyed if it’s spelt wrong (go figure)

I'm another Naomi whose parents and siblings pronounce my name differently to how I do! 🤣

Weirdly spelling doesn't bother me too much and the only pronunciation that bothered me was "Ni-oh-me", but I realise that was more of an accent issue as now I live in Wales where loads of people pronounce it like that and it doesn't bother me!

PurpleChrayn · 11/12/2024 20:20

I love it.

I have one.

The pronunciation is an issue though.

At nursery she's known as Nigh-OH-me. Older people say it NAY-ermee. We pronounce it Nay-OH-me.

I’m biased as I have one month old Naomi, but I love it!

People are rarely rude about a name once the baby has arrived, but we’ve had a lot of compliments and they seem genuine. Lots of people saying you don’t come across it often but it’s recognisably a name. Several people have asked if we’re pronouncing it NayOhMi or NyOhMi so if different pronunciations will annoy you that’s something to consider—but at least people are aware of the different options and ask! I don’t really hear the difference, myself (and I think in the UK NayOhMi is more southern and NyOhMi more northern?).

I also considered beforehand that it might be a bit dated/90s, and it’s definitely been declining in popularity since the mid-90s, but that was a bit of a unintended feature of our shortlist, so not important in the end.

DuchessOfSausage · 08/12/2024 13:25

@Scutterbug , I'd say NAY-o-mi, but I've heard Nay-O-mi, NIGH-u-mi, Nigh-O-mi, NA-o-mi, Na-O-mi...

CruCru · 08/12/2024 13:11

A friend of my mum had a daughter she called Naomi but she wanted it pronounced “Name-ee”. If someone pronounces it differently from the way you do, how much will it annoy you?

It's NAY-oh-mee in the UK isn't it? The others are mispronunciations I think

My friend is nay-u-mi. She’s in the uk.
