We have number 2 on the way! What are people's views on the name Camille NN Cami? We are after something elegant but not too frilly and something that will carry them well from childhood to adulthood. How do you imagine someone with the name Camille? Thank you all in advance!

I know one! She's very petite, very pretty and very good at her job!

Love Camille and Camilla (prefer Camille)

Loath Cammie. Or indeed anything with a twee and childish ‘ie’ on the end.

We are not French but we love the country 😍 and often visit. I presume most of my English friends and family would say ca-meel.
DH not a fan of Camilla but likes Camille.

I think she'll just be called Cam-mill in that case.
My DC are half French and speak French but we avoided this name as we knew barely anyone would pronounce it properly here.

Beautiful name

SugarIsHardtoAvoid · 05/12/2024 22:26

Cami sounds a lot like Kemi (Badenoch). Depends how you feel about people perhaps assuming you’ve named the baby after the leader of the Opposition, or wherever her future career takes her after the next election.

Nikitaspearlearring · 05/12/2024 22:21

I've loved it since I met a French Camille. I'm not keen on Camilla. Love Milly as a nn, or Cam is OK.

Kool4katz · 05/12/2024 22:19

I'd be thinking of the violent murder of poor Camille in the novel by Emil Zola. 😢
I read it as a teen and found it both enthralling and horrifying. 😂

MaggieBsBoat · 05/12/2024 22:18

I love it, but please pronounce it the French (and proper) way - Cam-ee (with soft almost inaudible ya at the end!)

Leafstamp · 05/12/2024 22:15

Not sure of pronunciation but my first thought was was that Kamil is a boys’ name. And that would be how I would spell the name if someone said their name was Cam-Mill or Cam-Meal or even Car-meal

I think they’d spend their lifetime having it spelt or pronounced wrongly.

Moveoverdarlin · 05/12/2024 22:15

I love it (and I never say that on name threads).

I went to school with a Camilla. She didn’t have a Nn, but she pronounced it KehMILLa. We had one teacher who insisted on calling her Camel-ar. 🐫

Camille for a boy or a girl?

Judging by the other potential names a girl.

I can’t see anyone in England naturally pronouncing it anything other than Cameel. Most people would then pronounce it Howe they were told, some people will always pronounce it how the think it should be just to make a point.

This is the chance you take when using a foreign name.

I love Camilla and I like Camille.
Camille, I prefer the English way.
Cam, Cami, Milly and Milla are sweet nick names.

Sunnyflow · 05/12/2024 21:35

Camille is pronouced with 3 syllables as Ca-mill-eh in German, just to confuse things even more Grin

Camilla works best in the UK

I prefer Camilla too (Milla/Mills/Milie/Cami as NN)
Camille is just a bit meh

Should anyone be interested
[ hmm ] not : rolling_eyes : (without spaces)

@Flustration , yes, sure. it's a nice enough name but I am wondering why OP is planning on using it and shortening it to Cami.Smile

Flustration · 05/12/2024 20:09

@MerryChristmasToYou let's agree to differ.

MerryChristmasToYou · 05/12/2024 20:02

@Flustration , it wasn't an eyeroll, it was a raised eyebrow.
Raising an eyebrow at a generalisation is not rude.

Colourblinds · 05/12/2024 20:01

In my area of the UK, amongst my friends it is a name that would be easy to pronounce and that most of my friends and family are familiar with. In your area/friendship group it is not. That's ok and presumably why the OP was after multiple opinions.

The baby name board is weird & I don’t think representative of real life tbh.

Colourblinds · 05/12/2024 19:58

😆😆😆 meant to type T not G!

You have made an assumption about me. I have several people who speak French as their 1st, 2nd or 3rd language in my friendship group. Some are French and others are from French-speaking countries. The name is unisex in those countries.

So most of your friends and family would be able to pronounce it. No need for the eye roll then.
