I met a woman the other day through work called Bronia.

I thought it was so pretty and unusual!

I was looking it up and some websites say it's a Polish name, and some other websites say it's a Welsh name.

Is it a Welsh name does anyone know? I just like to know where a name comes from and what it means.

And what do you think of it?

Brón does mean sorrow in Irish @Arlanymor.
Tá brón orm means I am sad.

Ah well - I defer to whoever knows best - I have no idea, because Welsh isn't similar at all unfortunately. I was just adding a list of names that have sorrow-related roots.

The Welsh word bron is similar to the Irish word bronn that means bosom. Bronn gets said brón hence confusion. And spellings muddled etc.

I love it because it's kind of a masculine sounding name, but the bronia I know is really dainty and pretty.

It kind of makes her seem fierce and strong.

I was at school with a Bronja (pronounced Bronyah) in 1979.
