Which name do you prefer for a boy? Already have an Isaac.

Both are lovely names, but I think Isaac and Jude sound best together

Jessieshome · 04/03/2025 12:41

Very biblical. Then I guess so many names are. I'm not a big fan of Elijah and I know a few, all known as Eli. I really like Jude.

The fact that it is the spelling for the word Jew in German, is no problem for the reasons other people have pointed out. I've never heard anyone say the name Christian might not travel well?

Busted2006 · 04/03/2025 12:36

I think Jude has a similar softness to Isaac.

I don’t know why but I just can’t love Elijah. Even though it’s a perfectly good solid choice.

I would probably go with Jude.

I know you didn’t ask for opinions but other names that I think go perfectly with Isaac are:

Samuel
Benjamin
Joshua

sel2223 · 03/03/2025 23:55

I can't choose as really like them both! (Also love Isaac so we clearly have similar taste)

NearlyThere91 · 03/03/2025 23:27

Defo Jude imo. Elijah not remotely to my liking. Also worth saying Jude Law and Jude Bellingham internationally renowned (and JB played in Germany for 4 years). It’s pronounced v differently to the German word mentioned above

SorcererGaheris · 01/12/2024 23:41

Both are nice; I personally like Jude a bit more, though.

ChocolateCakeOverspill · 01/12/2024 20:50

I’m not sure why that would be an issue (I say that as a Jude)

Sunnyflow · 01/12/2024 15:33

I’d really like to understand why Jude being German for Jew is a problem.

I think the op should be aware that other languages might have different associations with a name than Brits or Americans do

The word Jude (pronounced Yoo-deh) means Jew in German and would be extremely unusual as a first name!

It therefore doesn't travel well.

Isn't that what these threads are for - to inform other users of aspects they might want to consider when choosing a name?

Nap1983 · 01/12/2024 10:11

I love Jude, really nice not to popular, would use it!
I really Dislike Elijah

bridgetreilly · 01/12/2024 10:02

Elijah, but also like just Eli.

weareallcats · 30/11/2024 23:46

I have a Jude, we also liked Elijah. My boy is 16 now and I still feel absolutely confident that we chose a good name.

Things to consider:

  • It rhymes with a lot of things
  • Friends may well call him ‘Judy’
  • People will sing ‘Hey Jude’ at him, a lot, ongoing…
  • Some may make an association with Judas, although it is a separate name

Still a great name.

Scutterbug · 30/11/2024 18:13

Oh I love both! I have an Isaac too. I would go with Jude I think.

FloralGums · 30/11/2024 18:11

Elijah

Lion1618 · 30/11/2024 17:59

Jude

KirstenBlest · 30/11/2024 11:15

ChocolateCakeOverspill · 30/11/2024 07:57

Why? What’s wrong with that?

It has strong associations with the Holocaust.

Redkitesoaring · 30/11/2024 09:55

Jude. Lovely name.

sel2223 · 30/11/2024 09:54

Two of my favourite boys names!

ChocolateCakeOverspill · 30/11/2024 08:37

@Sunnyflow

Sorry to raise it again but as someone called Jude, with Jewish heritage I’d really like to understand why Jude being German for Jew is a problem.

Or can anyone else help me understand?

Wrinkleyoldbag · 30/11/2024 08:26

I love Jude.
The Elijah in my child’s class goes by Eli now.

Teaandsympathy34 · 30/11/2024 08:15

I prefer Jude.

Potentiallyplausible · 30/11/2024 08:13

Jude by far

ChocolateCakeOverspill · 30/11/2024 07:57

Sunnyflow · 29/11/2024 16:58

Elijah

Jude is the German word for Jew. It does travel well imo.

Why? What’s wrong with that?

AdventuresAwait · 30/11/2024 07:55

Love Jude!

Manchesterbythesea · 30/11/2024 07:52

Not a fan of either but if I had to pick it would be Jude. Elijah & Isaac are very samey.

BoleynMemories13 · 30/11/2024 07:46

I much prefer Jude, especially with Isaac. Isaac and Elijah are quite samey for brothers, with both having the same strong 'eye' sound.

Also, from my experience working in a school, Elijah appears to be a name that many young children really struggle to pronounce.
