Sibling for Violet.

had a shortlist we were happy with but now unsure

Sophie
Alice
Juliet

I think the et for Juliet and Violet is too much. I’ve been put off the other two after hearing some people discuss them and they seem to be super popular in our area ‘no not that Sophie, Sophie you know the one who lives in X no not the one who lives in Y etc’

I am at a bit of a loss now. We can’t do

  • any names ending in -y sound due to surname (so Emily Natalie etc)
  • Charlotte Isabelle Eva Lily Rose Elizabeth Emma Anna as these are cousins names
  • any names with same initial or any plant names/nature names due to using Violet already as I think it would be a bit much

help!

I think you need to rule out Sophie if you don't want the -y ending matching the surname.

Alice is a wonderful name! Pretty and classic.

Alternatively, Elise instead of Alice?
Juliana instead of Juliet?

Amelia

Have you had these names in mind for a while? If so I reckon that might be why you are going off them. Alice is a beautiful name, once attached to your new daughter it would be more meaningful. What about Jules?

Are Hazel and Violet not the names of Emily Blunts daughters? Useless bit of general knowledge but that would probably be enough to put me off it if a celeb had the exact same name combo. Sorry.

LiptonIcedMe · 25/11/2024 06:26

@Wagenwagen

Cora
Emma
Beth
Anna
Elise (bit like Alice!)

FWIW we have a surname that ends in y and DD’s first name ends in y.. it sounds fine.

I like both Sophie and Alice and I don't think they are quite popular enough in he current generation of babies to cause the problems you described. However you did say you don't like the -ie ending and Sophie had it, so that would narrow it down to Alice for me. I like Juliet in theory, but there seems to be some lack of agreement on how to pronounce it (JUliet or JuliET) and, as you say, maybe it's a bit similar to Violet.

I wouldn't automatically rule out another plant name if you love it. A friend of mine has twins called Violet and another flower name.

How about May? Overused as a middle name but not that common as a first name and has a similar sort of Victorian/Edwardian vibe to Violet. And it can be a flower or not, as you prefer (it's also been used as a short form or Mary or to reference the month).

Alice is lovely and a good match with Violet. It's normal to have a naming wobble as picking a name is such a big commitment, but I honestly think you should try to remember what you love about Alice. At the end of the day, does it really matter if there are others around? Violet is getting fairly popular now anyway.

Sophie has a double/treble whammy in terms of popularity, as Sophia/Sofia are very popular too, but I think you're fine with Alice.

Thanks everyone. I am really liking:

Clara
Eloise
Hazel
Florence
Norah
Mabel and yes I have left Alice on the list

To be honest all the names are gorgeous but some also taken with siblings and in laws and friends etc.

I love Vivienne but I wouldn’t do two starting with V - I don’t like when other people do it! a friend has Amy and Aaron and I just find it a bit much.

I am not strongly leaning towards hazel. However surname beings with H.

Would that be a deal breaker for anyone?

It’s depends on the surname - e.g. Hazel Hayman sounds too match to me, but Hazel Harrington sounds good (different vowel sounds and number of syllables).
