South Walian and I and other South Walians do. Are you Cardiff by any chance?

@TroysMammy , how would you say eich, eirin, eiddil, eiddo, eisteddfod, eisioes, geirfa, geifr, breintiau etc?

That makes more sense!

A girl's name from Scandinavia:

Snøfrid or Snefrid (Snø/Sne means snow, "frid" means beautiful).

Also, "snow" absolutely does rhyme with "know". I am also trying to think of how that could possibly be either insulting or ignorant. Someone speaking a different dialect where they rhyme (in which dialect don't they rhyme?), is neither of those things.

Am I going mad? Snow does rhyme with know?!

I'm glad you asked. 😂

Writerscompanion · 19/11/2024 13:52

GogLais · 19/11/2024 13:42

Not all Welsh folk pronounce it the same way though.
Mother-tongue Welsh speakers would not say it Eye-ra, because it's a phonetic language.
It's like saying snow rhymes with know. It doesn't and it's insulting or ignorant to say it does.

@Keleshey , it depends if you are treating it as a Welsh word or not. The Welsh word for snow isn't Eye-ra.

The Irish word for ice "oighear" is similar to Welsh for snow "eira". The Irish is sometimes "oighre", which is pronounced the same as the Welsh.
It isn't used as a name but I think "Sneachta" (snow) might be once in a while.

South Walian as well and would never say Eye-rah.

Mid Wales and I've only heard it pronounced Eye-rah (including from two people who have the name). My mum and grandmother are both first language Welsh and both also so Eye-rah. I don't think either pronunciations are incorrect.

Would agree with this. There was a girl called Eira-Jane in our street - eye-rah.

I'd say Eira is pronounced Eye-rah. That's how my friend's dog's name is pronounced.

Please learn how to say it properly though if you’re going to use it. Thanks, The Welsh.

Not all Welsh folk pronounce it the same way though.

There's an Eira in my family in North Wales where everyone says Ayrah (Ay as in May). But elsewhere in Wales I've heard it pronounced Ira or even Eera.

Beautiful name though and our Eira earned her name by being born during a blizzard!

spiderlight · 19/11/2024 11:59

TroysMammy · 19/11/2024 11:45

I'd say Eira is pronounced Eye-rah. That's how my friend's dog's name is pronounced.

It's more of an 'Ay' (as in hay) than 'Eye' - it does tend to be pronounced like 'Ira' but that's not strictly right.
