Timeless girls’ names

Are these names timeless (think Cleo is probably not)? Which do you like/dislike? Other suggestions welcome :)

Alice
Anna
Cleo
Cassandra
Marina
Alexandra

I don’t mind if a name is popular now, but I would like to avoid names that are ONLY likely to be popular now, if that makes sense!

For example, if a woman here (Scotland) is called Kathryn/Mhairi/Mairi/Kirsty you can fairly reliably guess she was born in the ‘80s… would like to minimise that risk.

I used the same thinking to name my three. Recognisable and dateless names that have been around for centuries.
Neither girl names have been listed here!
I love Anna from your list.

desperatedaysareover · 19/11/2024 05:04

I too think of Only Fools when I hear Cassandra but it’s a name from Greek mythology, isn’t it? Cassie is nice and gentle.

Julia or Claudia - don’t get more timeless than Roman!

Jessica? I don’t particularly associate it with any era, lots of of famous ones as well.

I love a name thread when I can't sleep.

I wanted classic 'don't date' names for my dds and both their first and second names are repeatedly mentioned on the thread.

They are teens now and both are the only ones in their year group but have a few in the school both above and below so not uncommon but not mega popular. In contrast they have multiple versions on Evie/maisie/ellie in their years (all of which are nice names btw, just the Clare/sarah of their time).

Elizabeth is an excellent name. Like you and Lucy I had a close family member/dhs ex called that so avoided but it's great. Lots of good shortening to suit your baby, you couldn't immediately guess her age etc.

Alexandra is similar as is Charlotte. The slightly longer names give more scope for nicknames (although my longer names child is her full name to everyone else despite us planning to shorten).

Isabelle is another perhaps? Although a little of spelling variations. Emily or Emma? Louise/a?

Of your list I am biased as one is dds middle name and one was the middle name we were planning on using for the other DDs until bil got there first. But basically the A names are all excellent.

I would say Cleo and Marina are the outliers to me.

I so agree about popularity vs trends/names dating - I wish more people would consider that it’s not really the end of the world if there happen to be 2 of the same name in a class (as gone are the days where there would likely be 3 or 4 of the same name) but it would be horrible to be the “Karen” of 40 years time 😢

While technically Elizabeth is the only popular yet timeless name - names like Alice, Anna and Alexandra (which have drifted in and out of the Top 100) have such a classic feel that they come pretty close imo. Other names in this vein would be ones like Charlotte, Emily, Eleanor, Maria etc

Or you can go the “ only occasionally in the Top 100” route (or never quite made it) so it’s equally hard for them to date, despite still being well known - Marina and Cassandra would be this style, as would many of the similar Classical (Latinate/Greek) names like Julia, Helena, Lydia, Louisa, Diana etc.

Cleo is tricky - technically it’s not popular enough to date yet, but “O” ending names are a trend and it’s certainly rapidly increased in popularity in the last decade, so personally unless it was your absolute favourite, I’d choose something else.

Agree that Anna, Alice and Alexandra are the classics there. We had a Princess Marina in our Royal Family when I was growing up. I see her dates were 1906-1968. She was the mother of Princess Alexandra. Princess Marina was born into the Greek Royal Family who were of Danish extraction.

Other classic and timeless names:
Elizabeth
Katherine/Katharine/Catherine (i.e. the traditional spellings, not Kathryn)
Ann(e)
Eleanor
Rose
Mary, Maria
Charlotte

Other very long-used names have had surges in popularity in particular decades or have got associated with a particular person/type of person. That often leads to a big drop in popularity in subsequent decades. Thinking here of names like:
Olivia
Sophie
Sophia
Margaret
Sarah
Amelia
Isabelle/a, Isobel
Joan
Jane
Judith
Harriet/Henrietta

I love most of the names on your second list, but I totally agree that while they seem timeless, almost everyone I have ever met with those names would presently be either quite old or small children (exception being Sarah, whose age I don’t think I could guess from the name). Very few millennial Margarets or Joan’s out there…

Thanks all. I love a lot of these. I didn’t realise Marina and Cassandra had an ‘80s association so that’s interesting!

Lucy may be my favourite name, but we have several very close family friends with that name so want to avoid. I think Alice has the closest vibe to Lucy - feminine but not fussy and soft where Cassandra / Alexandra / Harriet are strong.

Lucinda?
Lucia?
Lucille?

Nickname Lu or Lulu rather than Lucy?

Someone told me once that the only girls name that can be considered truly timeless is Elizabeth. I don't know if that's true but I can't think of another name that doesn't seem to 'belong' more to people of a particular age.

Alice, Anna and Alexandra are pretty timeless though, I would say.

Firsttimebabymummy · 18/11/2024 14:58

Alice, Anna and Alexandra I would say are timeless.

I'm biased as have a 6month Alexandra but love the name.

Really like Anna and Alice too.
I also had Elizabeth, Victoria, Lydia and Rose on the list.
Would also suggest Charlotte, Lucy, Hannah and Amelia.

Naomi, Grace, or Charlotte

Trust Jane.

Ann/Anne
Elinor/Eleanor
Elizabeth, Eliza
Lucy
Margaret
Marianne
Jane
Caroline
Mary/Maria
Charlotte
Catherine
Harriet/Henrietta
Louisa
Lydia
Francis/Fanny - ok maybe that one had fallen out of vogue
Julia
Georgiana
Rebecca
Emma/Emily
Isabella
Sophia
Alice/Alicia

Mipil · 18/11/2024 13:06

I think if you want truly timeless, you need to pick a popular classic name that is always in the top 100. If you pick an uncommon name, there is always a risk that it will become popular and associated with an era.

I don’t really associate any of your names with an era but Anna and Alexandra are probably more timeless than Marina or Cassandra because they are associated with every era rather than no era IYSWIM?

Moreteaandchocolate · 18/11/2024 13:06

Agree with others that Alice, Anna and Alexandra are the most timeless from your list. Although I don’t think Marina or Cassandra have ever been popular enough to be dated to a particular decade in a strong way, and definitely wouldn’t date the children to this decade. Cleo feels quite “of the moment” and could possibly risk becoming dated to this decade, depending if it keeps rising in popularity or not.

Other names that seem fairly timeless to me include (although some are more timeless than others)

Lucy
Emma
Rose / Rosa
Sophie
Abigail
Caroline
Charlotte
Helena
Madeleine
Eleanor
Annabel
Philippa
Beth
Kate
Jessica
Esther
Sadie
Hannah
Juliet
Harriet
Lydia
Georgia
Imogen

Very few names are truly timeless. Grace, for example, is highly likely to be either very old or born after 1990. (Quite a few names like that because of name cycles.) Charlotte probably born after 1970s although is more 'timeless'. My mum still thinks of Hannah as an 'old maid's name' and was surprised when it became so popular around the 1980s.

I couldn't guess the age of an Elizabeth if they were called out by the GP receptionist. Perhaps Anna and Alice too, although relatively few Alices born around 1950s, more Alison, and Anne was more popular around 1940s.

I'd just go with what you like! My favourite of your list is Anna, then Cassandra.
