I'm NOT naming her after my sister!

I'm wanting to get opinions on this name vs my DSs please.

We are having a baby girl and both really like the name Pippin. We'd mostly call her Pip, and have the options of Pippy or Pips. I like a name with lots of variation options that we like.

The thing making me unsure is I have a sister called Philippa and I know that a lot of people called Pip have it shortened from Philippa. I don't want people to always be asking Pip- is she Philippa named after your DS?

However DS has always been Phil and NEVER Pip so I can't decide if that makes it a non issue?

Side note- can Pippin be taken seriously on job applications etc?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Pippa as a full name might be awkward too when she goes on holiday.. Pipa is Greek slang for blow job, & pipi means pee in several languages…

I agree that Pippin’s an absolute no, though.

It’s fuck in my language..

Call her Apple.

TheLittleOldWomanWhoShrinks · 11/11/2024 13:36

On the offchance that this isn't a wind-up - please, please don't do that to your poor daughter.

leia24 · 11/11/2024 13:36

Surely you aren't for real? You can't call a baby Pippin

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 11/11/2024 13:36

I love Pippin for a three year old girl. For a forty year old tax lawyer not so much. It's one of those names that sounds cute but doesn't grow with its owner because there's nowhere for it to go. Whereas Pippa can be Pippin whilst small, Pip as a teenager and then Pippa as an adult.

Pippin to me says:
(Male) hobbit, full name Peregrine
apple
(Female) character from Antonia Forest Kingscote school stories, full name Pomona

ok for an adult as long as she is going into TV production or similar

If you call her Pippi for short nobody will make fun of her because they will know she’s the strongest girl in the world 😊

I forgot Pomona Todd. I always hope she ended up a well-known musician and got her revenge on sneery Tim Keith. (I mean, it’s not that utterly hilarious that she and her cello are similar in shape, is it?)

AllTheNaps · 11/11/2024 13:34

@potatocakesinprogress there was one main dog that did most of the filming but my friends dog was one of two other that stood in and did other short scenes occasionally.
Useless fact of the day 😂

Daschund1 · 11/11/2024 13:34

Please don't, you're setting her up for a lifetime of Hobbit remarks.

Pinkelephant66 · 11/11/2024 13:34

i immediately think of the programme ‘come outside’. Pippin’s the dog

VacuumPacked · 11/11/2024 13:33

what a glorious thread, ha ha !

Pippin is the name of the dog on Come out side .

Blueuggboots · 11/11/2024 13:33

Pippin is a dog's/cat's/cuddly pet's name I'm afraid.

Needmorelego · 11/11/2024 13:33

Oh dear.... we've scared the OP away.
@Sprinklesandsprinkles it's fine for a nickname 🙂

Fluffyc1ouds · 11/11/2024 13:32

How about Pippa instead?

potatocakesinprogress · 11/11/2024 13:31

Needmorelego · 11/11/2024 13:30

@potatocakesinprogress there were several Pippin's over the years. Most were children/grandchildren of original Pippin.
I am curious why she required a stunt double 😂

We need a whole thread about all this now. Pippin is iconic.

ATastingMenuButItsAllCrisps · 11/11/2024 13:31

@Sprinklesandsprinkles would you,as a grown woman, want to be called Pippin?
What other names are on the table?

I think pippin is cute

Why would you want to call a real person something 'cute'?
I can't understand why so many seem unable to grasp the concept that this person will not be a baby, toddler or child forever, God willing.
I think sometimes people forget they are not naming a doll.

Toddlerteaplease · 11/11/2024 13:28

Pippin is a horses name.

TruthAndTrust · 11/11/2024 13:28

It sounds cute but I'd use it as a nickname. People will think you've named her after your sister, even if you say you haven't.
I'd think of the LOTR hobbit which isn't great.

I don't think the job application worry is a consideration. Lots of people have odd names. It doesn't matter.

People get used to odd names very quickly so you don't need to angst too much.

That reminds me, my friends childhood dog was one of the stunt doubles for the dog called Pippin in the 90s show Come Outside 😅

No way!!! How many of them are there? I thought it was just the one dog. Did they pay the dogs?

There's a beautiful cat called "Pippin" on Twitter/X (and dozens of other cats and dogs called "Pippin").

I have a niece called Piper. She is always known as Pips but Pippin would work too.
