I'm NOT naming her after my sister!

I'm wanting to get opinions on this name vs my DSs please.

We are having a baby girl and both really like the name Pippin. We'd mostly call her Pip, and have the options of Pippy or Pips. I like a name with lots of variation options that we like.

The thing making me unsure is I have a sister called Philippa and I know that a lot of people called Pip have it shortened from Philippa. I don't want people to always be asking Pip- is she Philippa named after your DS?

However DS has always been Phil and NEVER Pip so I can't decide if that makes it a non issue?

Side note- can Pippin be taken seriously on job applications etc?

Pippin sounds like a name for a penguin?

CurlewKate · 11/11/2024 15:55

I would assume she was Phillipa after your sister. I think most people would. "Oh, that's so sweet- little baby Pippin!"

Nope. It’s an apple, although I have met a couple of labradors who will answer to it…

RuthW · 11/11/2024 15:42

Pippin is dog you would name after your sister.

Pippa is a baby named after your sister.

Something else is a baby not named after your sister.

I think pippin is cute

Me too! I think we're in a minority though!

TheRutshireWI · 11/11/2024 15:40

Pippin is the dog who went to the sewage works on Come Outside with Aunty Mabel.

Laura36TTC · 11/11/2024 15:38

Sorry, Pippin reminds me of a cats name

DaisyChain505 · 11/11/2024 15:35

Pippin is a dogs name.

Clearly I am the only who’s thoughts turned to Pipkins and Hartley Hare

My first thoughts were "oh like pippin the dog" from the TV program Come outside.

I call both my DC by the names that are on their birth certificates, so for instance if I was going to use the name Chris i'd never put the name Christopher on their birth certificate, it would just be Chris.

Just me...I've never seen the point in shortening/changing names.

GiveMeTheFormula · 11/11/2024 15:28

Pippin always makes me think of Come Outside

YellowAsteroid · 11/11/2024 15:19

Not really, and I'd assume a boy/man. It's a cute name for a baby, but for a mature 45 year old?

EndlessTreadmill · 11/11/2024 15:10

Forget your sister - Pippin is a really dodgy name to give a child. She will have to spend her life explaining it, spelling it etc. Honestly it's a nightmare.
Give her a proper name, and that as a nickname if you want.

LurkingFromTheShadows · 11/11/2024 15:09

Go with Philippa. It's a proper name and you can still use pippin (if you must) as a nickname.

Jl2014 · 11/11/2024 15:05

Please not Pippin. Pippin is a hobbit. Remember you are not naming a baby. You are naming an adult. They will be stuck with this name.

Elrond: "What's Pippin short for?"
Gandalf: "He's a Hobbit."

That aside, it's a boy's name.

Exactly this - I was just going to say the same thing. All well and good to have a non-common name but Pippin is just a dog's name or a Hobbit name. And of course I wouldn't bias hiring someone on their name, but unconscious bias exists and I would seriously wonder what the parents were thinking.

Do yourself a favour and name your daughter something that won't get her confused as a boy, dog, your sister or a Hobbit character. Let alone getting teased about being one of these things because whether we like it or not, kids tease and are cruel so maybe don't give them fuel for the fire?

Attelina · 11/11/2024 15:04

I chose the name Pippin for our cat when we rescued her and her original name was Peaches.

She now lives with my daughter and hasn't applied for any jobs that I know of so I can't advise how it would look on a job application.

Personally I would call her Pippa and have her nickname as Pippin. Or possibly Pipkins but then that takes you into Hartley Hare territory.

hattie43 · 11/11/2024 15:01

Pippin is ridiculous.

Normallynumb · 11/11/2024 15:00

Just no, it's a dogs name!
How about Poppy?

Ohwtfnow · 11/11/2024 14:52

Pippin is a dog or an apple. I feel like this may be pregnancy hormones clouding judgement.

LL1991 · 11/11/2024 14:47

I'm sorry but as a 90s kid Pippin just makes me think of the dog from Come Outside! Personally I think you have to consider the name on an adult - Pippin is cute on a 4 year old in a Disney princess dress but isn't going to look great on a CV or an application for a magic circle firm.
Sorry, I know that's not what you want to hear.

user2848502016 · 11/11/2024 14:47

No it won't be taken seriously! At least call her Pippa as a full name!
Also your DS is Phil and you're going to call your DD Pippin?!

Silvers11 · 11/11/2024 14:45

To me Pippin is a boys name. He was a hobbit in Lord of the Rings. Pippa DOES sound like as if you got the name from your Sister's name of Phillipa. Does it actually matter if you like the name you want to give to your unborn daughter?

HarrisObviously · 11/11/2024 14:44

@Sprinklesandsprinkles
I hope your surname isn't Cox or Orange.

Pippin - are you on glue?

😂😂😂😂
