I'm NOT naming her after my sister!

I'm wanting to get opinions on this name vs my DSs please.

We are having a baby girl and both really like the name Pippin. We'd mostly call her Pip, and have the options of Pippy or Pips. I like a name with lots of variation options that we like.

The thing making me unsure is I have a sister called Philippa and I know that a lot of people called Pip have it shortened from Philippa. I don't want people to always be asking Pip- is she Philippa named after your DS?

However DS has always been Phil and NEVER Pip so I can't decide if that makes it a non issue?

Side note- can Pippin be taken seriously on job applications etc?

Felix goes back to the Roman Empire. Pippin goes back to many dogs and cats in the 20th century.

i actually think it’s quite nice though. But not with a Phil brother and Philippa aunt they are basically all the same name.

I must have made something unclear as a few people have thought the same- the only Phil/Philippa in the family is my sister there's not another one alongside her.

I really had thought Pippin was a legit female name, it seems not! To all of those horrified about Pippin the dog, I'm honestly not too worried about that 🤣 and the kids friends would have absolutely no idea about the show.

It sounds like a consensus would be to use it as a middle name and nickname her Pip. However I've always thought it's silly to call somebody after their middle name as of you want to call them that it should be their first name!

Not due for a while so there's time to keep thinking...

I interview a lot of young people and I get a fair few whose name is a shortening (with no long version - Ellie, Katie, Beth) but nobody named after an apple.
I imagine she'd spend her whole life saying "no, my parents weren't hippies, no, we didn't live in a commune".

artfuldodgerjack · 11/11/2024 21:06

Pippin - as in Pippin the dog? Why would you want to name a child the same as a TV dog? Will Lassie not do?

I never knew there was a Pippin apple! To all the people saying it's a cat's name, as someone mentioned how do you feel about all of the Felixs now going about?! And Oscars, that screams cat to me too

Pippin Origin and MeaningThe name Pippin is a boy's name of German origin meaning "awe-inspiring". Super-sweet name that was the title of a Broadway play -- but best known as a type of apple. The Dutch variation is Pepijn is finding some popularity in that country, where short nickname names are stylish.

Minihero · 11/11/2024 20:54

Emily is a beautiful, timeless name. Could have Emmy, Milly, Lee as nicknames.

Matilda - Tilly, Tilda, Matty,

Daisybuttercup12345 · 11/11/2024 20:50

Surely there was a dog on TV called Pippin? In any case it's a hobbit.
Felicity? Pip for a nn.

worriedaboutttc · 11/11/2024 20:45

Pippin makes me think of that woman with the plane and her dog 🐶

BashfulClam · 11/11/2024 19:55

My friends has a Philippa and uses Pippa day to day so I think people may think it’s Philippa.

mitogoshigg · 11/11/2024 19:46

Sorry no, it was my favourite comic when I was a kid!

It is also very close to your sister's name.

TenThousandSpoons · 11/11/2024 19:43

Pippin is a lovely name. For a hamster. 🐹

Allschoolsareartschools · 11/11/2024 19:43

Not RTFT but have you considered Poppy? Similar & easily shortened if you want to.

This is exactly what I was hoping/thinking but a couple previously told I liked Pip have said oh like Philippa 😩

Pip in Great Expectations was Philip, people will connect Pip with Philip/Philippa

Thank you! You're a perfect person to ask since you like the name, would your thoughts jump to thinking I'd named her after my sister Philippa if you knew I had a sister called "Phil"?

Why does this matter to you so much? Most people on this thread have focussed on name longevity i.e. when your daughter is no longer a small child; and very few people in your DC’s life beyond immediate family are even going to know she has an Aunt Philippa, let alone have any particular thoughts about whether they were the inspiration for the name.

If you’re worried about what immediate family might think negatively, I think the problem goes well beyond your DC’s name.

Pippin is a dog’s name.

This!! Use Pippa.

@Sprinklesandsprinkles no I wouldn't think that actually...with names, you usually know both the name and the derivative, and as your sister is never 'known as' Pip then nobody would really make that initial leap would they 🤷‍♀️.

Also, the people who really matter would know your child's full name (Pippin) which doesn't have any link to Philippa 🤷‍♀️

around..Up in the air or on the ground…

AlexaSetATimer · 11/11/2024 19:38

I know 3 dogs, one cat and one chinchilla called Pippin/Pip.

Not a serious name for a human, no.

Is there a reason you don't want anyone to connect your daughter's name with your sister? My grandfather was a horrible, abusive man so I eliminated anything that in anyway could be connected to his name for my DC. I would hate some distant relative in 5 generations with an interest in genealogy to look at the family tree and assume that the nasty old bully had been honoured in the name of a great grandchild and assume that he was the type of person that people would want to remember so any link was a no from me.

Nothing as strong as that, but we have our issues now we're grown ups and she wasn't happy at all for me when I had my first child (despite being over the moon for our other DS being pregnant at the same time as me). I don't feel that close to her anymore because of it so would never aim to name a child after her.

This will be our last child and I have 2 DS so that would also be unfair on other DS if I purposely named after Philippa

I’ve been Pippa for 58 years with no issues at all. I’ve been to Greece too.

@ObieJoyful
Empress Kitty is right though.
The Olympian Pippa Funnell had to go by her full name of Phillipa Funnell (which is a terrible married name!) during the Athens Olympics due to issues with the Greek meaning of Pippa.

Pippa as a full name might be awkward too when she goes on holiday.. Pipa is Greek slang for blow job, & pipi means pee in several languages…

I agree that Pippin’s an absolute no, though.
