How would you pronounce Clara?

Thinking of Clara for baby girl due early next year however I saw online that a lot of people pronounce it Claire-ah , I’ve always thought of it as Clar-ah (pronounced like Cara but with an L) now I’m in 2 minds as I don’t want to burden her with a name that gets mispronounced all the time. Is it a regional thing how it’s pronounced?

I did wonder that! Mine was from Hull though, think her husband was named George and she had a son Frank and daughter May?

Mine was my nan from Derby

I'm in the UK and I only like it pronounced Claire-a, which is how I, and several other people I knew, assumed it was pronounced back in the 70s and 80s when nobody was actually called it.

I immediately thought Clah-ra, and then remembered I had a great aunt (born late C19th ) who lived in Sheffield who was Clare- a

I wonder if we all share the same Yorkshire great aunt!

No, you're not, my previously mentioned colleague pronounces her daughter's name like the first syllable of Clarinet - Clarra.

But, sorry if this offends, it really doesn't sound nice at all. And it's even more irritating when she get's irked at literally everyone else who says "Clah-ra" with the long an instead of the short one.

Thanks glad someone knew what I meant even if my spelling of Clarinet is wrong, I probably say it wrong too. 😂

BarbaraHoward · 14/11/2024 11:00

I think this one comes down to accent, so unlike Naomi, Sara, Helena etc where there are multiple pronunciations and so you would be politely correcting to your preferred one, I think you would just have to accept the pronunciation used. Particularly from Americans.

Surely I can't be the only person to think Clara like Claranet?

Claranet and Clarinet - Wikipedia

A clarinet isn't a non-american claranet.

Only labouring the point because I can't see how you would get the Clara sound from the name of the instrument.

@CollisionCourse , If Claranet was a brand name, I'd say it as Clara-net.
I say clarinet as Clarrin-et.

Claranet would be quite a good name for a company.

After the first comment I googled to check my spelling (dyslexic) and there are definitely companies out there Claranet

Or it could be I've found an American spelling - always more logical than English spellings

Musical instrument

No it's not 🤣

Sorry but I laughed out loud at this.
Clara was a character in Heidi. Nobody is saying that Clara sounds like Heidi.

I saw the Heidi suggestion and thought... oh yes, I remember Clara in Heidi...
But the thought that they were to rhyme is just the funniest thing 😂 🤣 😆

UnderZealous · 14/11/2024 09:05

Claranet is a company name. Smile

Needmorelego · 14/11/2024 08:49

@comfyshoes2022 yes every version of A Little Princess I have seen has Sara pronounced Sarah.
I have always assumed it's like Ann vs Anne. Same name but different spelling.

That's just ignorant.
2 completely different names!

I know many “Sara”s who pronounce their name as “Sarah.”

CollisionCourse · 14/11/2024 08:39

Lol at the clara/clari-net comments 😆

UnderZealous · 14/11/2024 08:32

There's a musical instrument called a Clarinet.

Kla-ra/Klah-rah. Never Claire-a.

As an aside Cara in the US is also pronounced Care-a. It confused me for so long because a lot of people on Reddit swear by this baby sleep book called Taking Cara Babies which is by someone called Cara. I kept reading it over and over wondering why it was named such an odd thing until one day it clicked that they pronounce it "taking care a' babies" which is such an obviously good name 😆

To rhyme with Capybara

Clapybara?

CollisionCourse · 14/11/2024 07:05

As others have said, Clar - ra. I love it it's always been one of my favourites.

Also love Cora, which has a similar sound.
