Thoughts on girls name Alba

Me and my DH both love the name Alba, we like the link to the Spanish and a Italian meaning ‘Dawn’ and it’s also growing a lot in popularity in France (DH is French I’m English and we live in England currently). My concern is the Scottish connotations with the world meaning Scotland in Gaelic. Would people find this weird?

I know one, it's nice

Shinyandnew1 · 10/11/2024 19:38

It was the name of the daughter in The Time Traveller’s wife. I don’t think it’s a pretty name, tbh.

I like it, I know 3 under the age of about 7 with that name. I personally prefer Alva which I think might be Scandinavian although I'm not 100% sure on the origin

Don’t like it - it’s the Gaelic name for Scotland and it’s the name of a political party plus every taxi firm and skip hire company up here!

mynameiscalypso · 10/11/2024 19:36

It's quite a popular name - I know 3 I think.

My first thought would be BBC Alba, swiftly followed by clock radio

YouAreExtraExtra · 10/11/2024 19:36

It’s not very, for want of a better word, ‘girly’ sounding to my British ears.

Greentrilby · 10/11/2024 19:36

Yep, sorry OP, it’s forever a cassette player from the 70s

MaggieBsBoat · 10/11/2024 19:35

Lovely.

Meowingtwice · 10/11/2024 19:35

I know one Alba. I really like it though on first hearing it I hear Albert so that person might end up correcting people a lot, still I love the name.

Feelingstrange2 · 10/11/2024 19:34

Sounds like the name of a cheap radio
