I'm struggling to decide which name to choose. I want one that sounds nice, but also at the same time a name I hope won't result in my little angel being bullied in the future. I went through that!

So far I am thinking the following but undecided not sure which I like best.

Charla
Rebecca
Violet
Sabrina

Just interested in what the mums here think of these names. My hubby and I aren't together any more so I'm having to decide all this on my own as he's made it clear he's no longer interested in me, my DD and my unborn daughter.

TIA. x

I'm a Rebecca and am nearly always called Rebecca. Occasionally Bex, which I can deal with but don't really like. But in the vast majority of situations I am Rebecca because that's how I started/introduced myself. I really like it but hated how many there were when I was growing up - in almost every group there had to be Rebecca, Becca, Becky and Bex - just to distinguish. Or Rebecca B, Rebecca S, Rebecca M etc. But the youngest one I know now is 14 so I think it would be fresh.

I like Sabrina too. I instantly add 'The Teenage Witch' but don't think children nowadays would.

I'm not keen on Violet because it just sounds like violent to me.

Charla sounds like an unfinished Charlotte. I love Charlotte though. Don't like Charla.

RogueFemale · 10/11/2024 01:17

Charla - an invented name, no
Rebecca - will be called Becky, awful
Violet - nice
Sabrina - nice

And suggest Sibylla or Venetia.

StressedQueen · 09/11/2024 16:50

Charla - Horrible. Kids will find a way to bully anyway but this is especially bad because it just looks like Charles/Charlie so it seems like a boy's name.

Rebecca - It's okay. Not my fav but nothing too bad

Violet - Very pretty

Sabrina - Gorgeous and makes me think of Sabrina Carpenter

I think both Violet and Sabrina would be lovely on a girl

Sabrina is lovely. Can call her Bree as a nickname! Smile

Rebecca is nice but will get shortened to Becky. That's OK too though.

Not sure about Violet.

Charla is awful. (Sorry!) Blush

I am very sorry to hear that the father of your unborn baby has fucked off and left you both. Sad How and why do some men find it so easy to do this? Confused

I'm also sorry you were bullied. Flowers

You're gonna be a great mum! Smile

MagicianMoth · 09/11/2024 15:01

I love Rebecca. I think posters only think it's dull because there were lots of Rebeccas around in the 80s, I only know one under 20 called Rebecca. It's a very pretty name.

boysmuminherts · 09/11/2024 14:57

Violet and Rebecca are lovely
Sabrina is a teenage witch!
Charla doesn't sound like a real name.

sel2223 · 09/11/2024 14:47

I went to school with a Sabrina and she was teased a lot for being a teenage witch - this generation probably won't even know who that is but it would still put me off

I like Rebecca, timeless and classic

CookieMonster28 · 09/11/2024 12:19

Rebecca is quite dull IMO
Violet is my favourite

KirstenBlest · 09/11/2024 11:58

Not at all, @Aria999 . Both are valid spellings, but the way the name looks makes a difference. I prefer Catherine to Katherine and Katharine, but don't like Cate. (DD is Kate not short for anything)

KirstenBlest · 09/11/2024 11:27

Charla - too close to Charlotte with a dropped t. Carla seems classier.
Rebecca - was every other girl's name in the 1990s. Becky/Beck/Becca
Violet-pretty but ends up being Varlet or Vilet
Sabrina quite a strong name but pretty

GiraffeTree · 09/11/2024 06:00

I like Rebecca and I love Carla (not Charla sorry).

user1492757084 · 09/11/2024 05:56

I love all your names, except Charla.
I prefer Carla or Charlotte

My favourites, in order, inspired by your list ..

Rebecca Charlotte
Sabrina Violet
Charlotte Rebecca
Charlotte Serena
Carla Stephanie
Baccara Sabine

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 09/11/2024 00:05

Violet is fine/popular but not my cup of tea personally as I find it a quite harsh- I prefer rarer Shakespearean Viola (especially pronounced the European “Vee-oh-lah” way) or romantic Juliet if you want an “et” ending name.

Rebecca is very classic and your “safe” option imo- surprisingly underused on younger girls now too, but so traditional that she’s unlikely to have to worry about people commenting on it, or any teasing or misspelling or mispronunciation (the Rebekah that pp mentioned is uncommon compared to Rebecca so won’t be the default).

Sabrina is the standout one - a rich Celtic history, yet has never been super popular. It’s perhaps riskier than Rebecca as it’s more uncommon (so also has some more standout namesakes in the eponymous film, the Charlie’s Angel, the 80’s model/popstar and the teenage witch) but it’s very pretty and elegant imo . Of your four options, it would be my choice.

Charla is not my taste at all, sorry. I expect she’d spend a fair time correcting it from Charlotte. Maybe Carolina instead? Same etymology/origins and rare in this country, but more popular in Europe, where it’s pronounced “Ca- roh- leen - ah” so a bit like Sabrina in style.

Btw I’m a SMBC and I think names are easier if you don’t have to compromise with a partner! But I’m sorry you’re having a tough time atm 🌷

I love Rebecca but also prefer the Rebekah spelling. I love Violet too. Sabrina is fine but it sounds a bit dated to me. I know the others are older but they are timeless. Never heard Charla but... Charlotte?

lol I do actually like Rebekah despite not liking Rebecca. I'm sure that's illogical!

Aria999 · 08/11/2024 23:33

I would prefer Carla to Charla

I like Sabrina

Sorry to hear your husband has abandoned you both 😢 though I suppose it's good you found out what he's like early on.

I've never liked Violet or Rebecca for some reason but that's quite personal, they're perfectly ok names and I would not have thought would lead to bullying.

Though I suppose 'Rebecca Rabbit' might be a risk!

FloralGums · 08/11/2024 23:20

Not so keen on Charla, it just makes me think of Prince Charles.
Love Rebecca but prefer the Biblical spelling Rebekah.
Violet is lovely too. Nickname could be Lottie and you could have fun with the purple flower theme.

Firsttimebabymummy · 08/11/2024 23:15

Violet or Rebecca for me too.
I'd go with Violet. I like Vi as a nn and much prefer it over beccy or bex.
I'm biased and Violet was on my list.

Not keen on Chala and Sabrina makes me think of the singer as she's getting big.

OopsieeDaisy · 08/11/2024 22:03

Rebecca is lovely, I don’t think it’s overused at all! Violet is nice too. I haven’t heard Charla before and I’m not sure exactly how to pronounce it, but I’m not really keen.

Cintro · 08/11/2024 21:52

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to say thank you for your feedback for the names, and for your kind words tonight. Means a lot right now so thank you all. X

They're all nice imo but Sabrina stands out as particularly lovely.

EmraldBluey · 08/11/2024 19:41

violet 🩷

ThatGutsyHedgehog · 08/11/2024 19:40

Violet or Rebecca for me… as long as you’re happy with people shortening it as they inevitably will!
Sorry to hear about your husband, sending hugs your way xx

Moreteaandchocolate · 08/11/2024 19:21

Violet and Rebecca 😍

wafflesmgee · 08/11/2024 19:08

Best wishes
I love Rebecca and Violet
