Help! Save a poor boy from being called Jocelyn...

DC2 not due for ages, but DH and I can't find ANY boy's name we can agree on. Girls' names not a problem (we had the opposite dilemma with DS).

DH's sole contribution is Jocelyn . Or Evelyn (though I think he may be joking on that one). Or Offa (he is definitely taking the piss there).

We had thought of James, but common shortening + surname is frankly comic. DH has vetoed John, Michael, Edward and we've used William and Joseph already. Help!

A garnet is a cheap ruby isn't it? Could be a silly combo that, Ruby and Garnet Cheeseman.

Patrick is a great name. I also like Peter and Robert.

Think we'l have to leave this one and revisit later on: have been making wild suggestions such as Xerxes so could do with a lie-down

Our Patrick's cousins call him PJ, and we quite often call him Patrick John - it goes together really well, I think. Glad you like it - do hope your dp agrees!

Patrick John is a lovely combination . I have emailed DH re: Patrick and awaiting response...

(at work today, hence MN in lunchbreak rather than being out in the sunshine - boo)

I love Robert and Patrick. They are both classic but I don't know a single boy of either of these names (know adults).

Friend's hb likes Hereward and Cadwalader

I said 'What, no Abelard or Aloysius?' and they've now made the list too.

I like Albert and Bertram - but we used the latter for the dog. DH keeps murmuring 'Hereward' for DS2 due next month so I understand your feelings of 'Offa' entirely.

Not Jocelyn. I know a few young female Joscelyns and I always think it it harder on a boy to have a girl in the same class as them with the same name.

We've never had another Alexander in any of the schools, let alone classes that ds has been in. It's one of those names (like William, perhaps) that is always around, always recognisable, but not really fashionable.

A whole bunch of possible shortenings as well, none of them really horrible, which is a plus.

My ds is Patrick - he's the only young one we've ever met - and everybody likes his name - including him. More to the point, everybody can say and spell it. Have it with my compliments!

I hadn't though of Patrick - good name. I always associate Christopher with badly behaved children - scars from past experience . Plus I don't like Chris much at all.
