Emery wasn't well received so we took it off our list. These are the names still on our list, including the two new additions Lucy and Holly, and some of my worries, but I'm probably overthinking it. Let me know, what you think, please:

Keira - only thing I'm slightly worried about is that people might spell it Ciara or Kiera or that it sounds a bit dated. Otherwise I love it.

Everly - didn't get a good reaction from many people.

Sophie - might be not so nice for her to have a name so popular among the current mum-generation? I do love the sound of it.

Ruby - similar to Sophie as there will be lots about 20 years older than her, though not exactly mum-generation yet.

Poppy - I love this, but people have told me it is immature or that it reminds them of a nickname for a grandparent.

Isabella "Bella" - we don't like Izzy, but I guess if we introduced her as Bella this wouldn't come up.

Lucy - still slightly worried about the awful murder cases and whether the name is now strongly associated with it. But we love the sound and meaning.

Holly - lovely, but maybe also a bit dated?

So this is the list, without my comments. I would appreciate comments from you:

Keira
Everly
Sophie
Ruby
Poppy
Isabella "Bella"
Lucy
Holly

I'll read your comments and reply and then probably just take a few weeks to think about it and find out which one feels right.

There's a lot of people who make fun of the new trend of names that all end in "leigh". For example Brinlee, Mckinleigh etc. and then also names that are spelled very oddly and made specifically long. As in you could have Brooklyn but instead it's Brookelynn. I feel like Everleigh tends to be the name that gets brought up the most when having these discussions.

I've got twin teenage daughters called Holly and Sophia. Sophia is probably quite a bit more popular but that's mainly because we meet a lot of Sophie's.

Holly isn't that popular where I am at all. And it's definitely not dated imo.

I think you have to choose the names YOU like but I will give my opinions.

Keira - It isn't dated but yes you could get a few mis spellings. I think that spelling is the most common

Everly - I like it but tbh there's a lot of negative connotations with Everleigh as people make fun of that name

Sophie - It is very pretty imo. I don't know any little Sophie's, only teenagers

Ruby - I love Ruby, it is gorgeous and not popular really anymore

Poppy - I think it is really nice tbh. I can imagine it on anyone of any age but that might just be me

Isabella "Bella" - Yeah I know an Isobel who goes by Bella with no issues so that would be fine. I honestly think Isabella is the most popular on here though if that's an issue for you

Lucy - Definitely not going to be associated with that, it's a classic. One of my favourites out of all of your names

Holly - It isn't dated

Thank you. Just wondering, what are the negative associations with Everleigh?

Poppy, Ruby, Isabella and Sophie feel so overdone. I think all the Ruby’s are probably teenage now rather than in their 20s.

I like Holly and I don’t think it’s dated, there are 3 in one of my DC’s class at school.

twinkletoesimnot · 01/11/2024 15:42

Why not Lucinda instead of Lucy - you can always call her Lucy for short if you want to.

Moreteaandchocolate · 01/11/2024 15:40

Lucy is my favourite- a lovely classic, pretty for all ages and not overused. It’s such a long standing classic that Letby isn’t a big association for me.

I also really like -
Sophie ( but I know quite a few of all ages)
Ruby (love, not dated to me)
Poppy (I know adult Poppy’s who suit their name)
Holly (love!, not dated to me)
Keira (nice if you don’t mind the spelling variations)

Nice but I wouldn’t use personally -

Everly - nice but sounds a bit like heavily!
Isabella "Bella" - round us every other girl seems to be some variation of this name which has put me off it a bit.

Sophie
Isabella
Lucy

Poppy is meh

NC for obvious reasons!

I see the names differently to you as we all have different thoughts on names!

Keira - my name but I'm the "C" version. I like the K version and I think most people automatically think "K". The misspelling never bothers me but it might someone else.
Everly - I like this but sometimes think it's like Beverley without the B
Sophie - I have one, I don't think it's dated but it has been popular for a while.
Ruby - I don't think this is dated either but I remember hearing a baby called this 20 years ago and thinking it was v old fashioned!
Poppy - Lovely on a baby but not sure about it on an adult
Isabella "Bella" - I really like this
Lucy - Just not my taste but nice name
Holly - I love this name (probably my favourite from your list)

Sophie would be my choice. Yes it’s popular but I’ve found that it’s Sophia which is really overused, not Sophie - which I much prefer! There’s something more direct and lively about it, Sophia seems a bit naff somehow.

Holly is ok. I know a few, it’s definitely around, not particularly dated? Prefer Hebe (Hee-bee).

Don’t really like Lucy, bit wet. Ruby feels like it was in fashion briefly and is now out, it’s not a ‘classic’ at all. Poppy ok. Ciara I like a lot, why not this spelling?- but yes, the K versions will get misspelled sometimes, so don’t if that bothers you. Don’t like the others.

suggestions -

Hebe
Xanthe
Cora
Cleo
Molly

Holly is great!

BoleynMemories13 · 01/11/2024 15:03

I like Holly and Ruby the best. I don't think Holly is dated at all. Although there aren't currently as many as there once was it's actually very in fitting with current trends (ie/y names and plant names) - I'm surprised it isn't more popular than it currently is!

Ruby only massively boomed in the late 00s, due to the song. I'd say it had it's peak maybe 2008-2013ish but there are still plenty of young Rubys around so, like Holly, it doesn't feel dated to me.

Sophie and Lucy are nice classics. Both are currently very popular in the new mum generation, but are still both widely used today. I really wouldn't worry too much about associations with Lucy. It's a classic name so everyone will know others. It's not like Myra.

Keira is ok. Poppy is sweet but I agree it doesn't seem to age well. Very popular pet name too.

Isabella is a bit too frilly for me and I'm not keen on Bella at all. Everly and Emery are both too trendy/made up sounding.

I would put them in the following order:-

Holly
Ruby
Lucy
Keira
Sophie
Poppy
Isabella
Everly
Emery

Everly is lovely. The rest are imo overused..
I have a Ruby. She's 19... The rest are a bit wet..
Keira would be my second choice..

Every person has their own likes and dislikes.

You just have to choose names that you like.

For example, I personally dislike and have always disliked the name Lucy, but I have many extended family members, on both sides, and on multiple generations called Lucy.

I have never told any of them that I dislike their name.

The most recent Lucy is now around 5 years old. Did I tell her parents that I don't like that name. Nope.

It grates me. But they like it. Their choice.
