My friend called her girl KT. I kept asking her how she was going to spell it (thinking Katy or Katie) - she just kept saying KT. We went round in corcles for a while before the penny dropped and I shuddered inside.

Kategarden. that is weird. surely a baby's name is a huge part of their identity when they are little. what do they call him at home? "oi, you"?
though I have heard that in china they are becoming desperate for original names as there aren't many surnames. suggestions anyone?

I used to work with a Catalan girl called Thais, pronounced tie-ees - always liked the name after that. Fuck knows how you get tie-ees from Taichi though!

Am good friends with a Zoie, which actually I really like. I think her mum did misspell it when registering rather than do it deliberately, but as my friend is an actor now the extra i has come in handy with her Equity registration.

I once taught a Terrison - yes his dad's name was Terry! Met a boy called Farley last week, have never heard that before.

Maybe registars do point out odd names and weird spellings, but parents are too stubborn, or independent or summat to change them?

Back in the 70s the registar pointed out to my friends dad that his daughter's initials would be IRA, so he swapped her first names.

I've run into an 'X' - no other first name, no surname. His parents 'don't believe in names', but apparantly had to give some kind of name when registering the birth, so baby X he was.
I think the idea is he will pick his own name once older - wonder what will happen at playgroup, though.

I wonder why the registrar doesn't comment on some of the odder spellings- are they not allowed to?

Wouldn't you on being confronted with Porsher suggest the right spelling?

Aimee (Emmay) is French, means 'loved.'

Shocking how many people don't have a good basic grounding in Ancient Greek and Latin these days . Bring back verb declension recitation with a ruler over the knuckles for each one wrong.

I give you.... Benay because the parents liked the sound of JonBenet's name... but not its connotations... They are still there people!!!! Why oh why name your child after a little girl who was not only murdered but probably pimped around in vegas showgirl outfits by her parents? To me it is the epitome of ick.
(actually come to think of it JonBenet is even worse, all faux french and pretentious)

well we all know of a grown up and v powerful woman called CONDOLEEZZA which is apparently a misspelling of "CON DOLCEZZA" which is an operatic term- app her parents where opera aficionados but somewhere along the way the spelling got a bit wonky (and tbh even Condolcezza would have been a bit of a joke!)

i know an Emer (pronounced eeeemer) and an oisin (pronounced oshin) both are irish though!
My daughter is Alex-Leigh, didnt mean for it to be double like that but in hospital despite being in pink she kept getting mistaken for a boy! the Leigh spelling was cos it looked more feminine that Lee

oo oo - I have one. My friends DD goes to school with a girl called Sckai-Bleu (Sky Blue). Love it!
