I went to school with a Garray and have taught a Rikci (love that letter order).

In the highlands there are a lot of traditional names, I have also taught Donald Macdonald, Ewan Macewan, Gregor Macgregor and, a personal favourite, Aulay Macaulay.

Tiphainie,Danyal ,Manhattan and Buster all known here ,the Manahattan has a surname which makes her sound like a seedy film.

raye123, I too know a Taichi pronounced tie-ees. I think it might be a real name from elswhere in the world (Africa or the Caribbean?) Unless of course you're in Streatham and we know the same one?

A little bit the other way around, but when we were on holiday in South Africa, we met a wee boy called Sinjen. His parents had liked the name St John, but had changed the spelling to make it easier for him at school.

I look in a Day nursery and we have
Caue - Pronounced Cow-e.
Liyana - Prounced Le anna.

And ive heard of a Nevaeh Pronounced Nee-v-a (Think Nivea face cream!)
Choosen because its Heaven spelt backwards.

Melina is a greek name meaning honey (Mel e na rather than mel eeee na if you get what I mean)

Knew a child called (I thought) Amber-Lyn, turns out her name was AnnBoleyn (one word). Mum seemed really nice.

My friend was a midwife and encountered an Yvonne pronounced Whyvoney and a Pocahontas.

I was once served in a supermarket by a Nyckholah (Nicola)

My name is Sharon, but its pronounced as Share-On rather than Shaaahhron and that has caused me problems all my life.

And I have definately seen lots of stories in Take A Break about a Handrew
