Thoughts on Lumina?

Lumina is name of Latin origin. I heard it's first used in 1800s and it means 'lights'. I pronounce it LOO-me-na and potential nickname I would use, if needed, is Lumie, but I prefer Lumina.

What do you think?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
C152 · 30/10/2024 19:36

Reminds me of the makeup brand, Lumene.

MainStreetOrHighStreet · 30/10/2024 13:49

It made me think of Phillips Lumea, sorry OP. I agree it's a really pretty sound though.

Me too. I thought this thread was asking if it was worth buying one.

VeryQuaintIrene · 30/10/2024 19:39

In the US there was a model of Chevrolet car called the Lumina.

BESTAUNTB · 30/10/2024 19:41

Lucy, Helena, Nia, Eleanor all mean “light” and are much more attractive.

Concretejungle1 · 30/10/2024 19:42

It doesn't sound like a name, sorry

Love Lucy, Helena and Eleanor.

Like others, less keen on Lumina, sorry - I think it’s sounds like a brand name.

muddyford · 30/10/2024 20:16

Sounds like a light bulb.

Terzani · 30/10/2024 21:14

Aydel · 30/10/2024 18:39

There’s a Romanian name, Luminita (pronounced “Luminitsa”) that might be better?

Indeed, in Romanian ”lumina” means ”light”, but it's not used as a name. Luminița is the diminutive (”little light”).

MillyMichaelson · 30/10/2024 21:16

It's the name that, in a years time you'll go 'thank god we never called her Lumina, bloody pregnancy hormones!'

Figgygal · 30/10/2024 21:18

Agree with others it sounds like an electronics or hair removal brand

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 30/10/2024 21:18

I can see where you’re coming from but my first thought was the lumen of a tube - so sorry. Alba means first light/dawn.

samedifferent · 30/10/2024 22:24

I like slightly fancier names but not ones that make me think of hair removal. So it's a no from me.

beetlebrain · 30/10/2024 22:30

What about Stella?

VioletCrawleyForever · 30/10/2024 22:32

Pretty bad

Miloarmadillo2 · 30/10/2024 22:35

The association I have is the candelabra from Beauty and the Beast.
Seren is pretty if you like star/light names.

flashspeed · 30/10/2024 22:37

I think it's cute, reminds me of the character from Harvest Moon. People on mumsnet call their kids Otillie or Raffie or Hendrick 😂so there's much worse, doesn't make me think of a brand

suzettenoisette · 30/10/2024 23:00

It's pretty and I also like Lumie or Lumi. Lumi means "snow" in Finnish, very beautiful :)

Moveoverdarlin · 30/10/2024 23:05

Sounds like a lightbulb brand. I need a Lumina GU10 for that bloody bathroom light.

Of course it means lights, anyone could guess that.

Tarletonper · 30/10/2024 23:13

wickerlady · 30/10/2024 17:11

Sounds like a brand of Telly.

My parents had a Luminar telly in the 80s so not far off!

Daisybuttercup12345 · 30/10/2024 23:13

Awful. Please don't. You child has to live with it.

MrsSkylerWhite · 30/10/2024 23:13

Sounds like an Ikea light fitting. Sorry.

TheBirdintheCave · 31/10/2024 00:02

Topseyt123 · 30/10/2024 17:17

I really wouldn't.

Luminous, meaning glows in the dark and is very similar as they have the same root. Will your baby glow in the dark? 🤣

I remember as a child when luminous wrist watches were all the rage. I had a child's one for Christmas one year and I was delighted. I thought it was just the ticket! 😃

Edited

To be fair, my baby's name means 'war like' and mine means 'lotus'. She's not at all fearsome and I'm not a plant! 😅

OP, I actually like this one and feel the responses are a bit harsh to be honest!

It's unusual but doesn't strike me as particularly weird. I haven't heard of any of the brand names mentioned above before. I can see it fitting in well with Luna, Nova, Celeste etc.

LauderSyme · 31/10/2024 00:07

It ought to be lovely as it does capture the zeitgeist of current names and it is a melodic word with a nice meaning, but it struck me immediately as the name of a beauty brand.

Also I would struggle to get past the LOO bit. Sorry!

TheBirdintheCave · 31/10/2024 00:07

@nameXname Miranda wasn't a name either until Shakepeare took it from the Latin 'mirandus'. As created names go, taking something from a Latin root is WAY better than just whacking a load of random letters together.

LastNight1Dreamt1WentToManderleyAgain · 31/10/2024 00:35

Is Ray an acceptable unisex name? Solveig? Sheena?
