Emery, for a girl

suzettenoisette · 28/10/2024 21:09

It's new to our list.

Emery for a girl, nickname Emmy. I also like Emma, but know too many my age and older.

Would you pick Emery or Keira? Others on the list are Phoebe, Sophie, Ruby, Everly, Isabella "Bella", Poppy and maybe Emma.

Say Emery, hear board.

SnowFrogJelly · 29/10/2024 00:21

Board

Call her Emma or Emily instead

Thunderpants88 · 29/10/2024 00:08

Awful and ugly.

you say “emery” everyone thinks “board”

OnTheBounce · 28/10/2024 21:37

A lifetime of 'Sorry... did you say Emily? Oh... OK. As in...board?'

Yup, this.

You wouldn't want to do that to your dd, surely ?

As in emery board? Its a no from me, but what about Emmeline? Nn Emmy?

My first thought too!

CoffeeBeansGalore · 28/10/2024 23:11

Not Emery. Keira, Sophie & Phoebe are lovely.
Jemima (could be nn Emmy or Mimi)

nocoolnamesleft · 28/10/2024 23:11

Yeah, another word association straight to emery board. Phoebe and Sophie are lovely.

SleepPrettyDarling · 28/10/2024 22:59

How about Avery? Or Amelie? Emery just has negative connotations for me, sorry.

TheMummyJade · 28/10/2024 22:56

I adore Emery, I prefer it over Everly, as I find that to be a very Americanised name, most will probably disagree with me. I also adore Keira, and it is on my own list for my daughter coming soon.

HarrisObviously · 28/10/2024 22:45

Dick Emery...You are awful but I like you.
Just no!

suburburban · 28/10/2024 22:27

Mochudubh · 28/10/2024 22:26

Oooh, you are awful........but I like you.

I thought exactly the same

We're really showing our age😂

Mochudubh · 28/10/2024 22:26

Oooh, you are awful........but I like you.

DarkBlueStocking · 28/10/2024 21:18

It makes me think of Dick Emery. In drag.

Me too.

Moreteaandchocolate · 28/10/2024 22:25

I actually quite like Emery but because it’s unusual in the UK I’d get fed up of the nail gags and people mishearing it as Emily.

Ruby, Keira, Phoebe and Poppy are my favourites of your other ideas. Isabella is overused around me and Everly has similar problems to Emery in that these American style names aren’t very familiar / liked (yet) in the UK (although I admit I have a soft spot for some of them).

Emma and Emilia are my favourites of the Em names and she can still be Emmy for short?

kittykatsupreme · 28/10/2024 22:05

Dick Emery. Just no. Camp comedian in bad drag.

OtterOnAPlane · 28/10/2024 21:55

It sounds a bit like a 2 year old saying Emily. Or yes, Emery Board.

You’re going to have an amazing daughter who can have any name in the world! You can do far better than Emery.

TheHangingGardensOfBasildon · 28/10/2024 21:50

How about Hemera, if you're after something a bit more unusual - pronounced HAY-muh-ruh?

Yep, emery board, Dick Emery (to those of us of a certain age), sounds like the majority of the word haemorrhage (especially bad if your surname starts with J), people will assume you said Emily and that will stick in their minds, regardless of how much you correct them.

Sorry, I wouldn't.

SometimesCalmPerson · 28/10/2024 21:40

Emery is as strange as Everly and Keira is still lovely, as would be Emily or Emma. Have you got a middle name yet?

OnTheBounce · 28/10/2024 21:37

A lifetime of 'Sorry... did you say Emily? Oh... OK. As in...board?'

OopsieeDaisy · 28/10/2024 21:34

Emery board was my first thought too, as it seems was everyone else’s. The other names on your list are all nice, my favourite is Sophie.

pamshortsbrokenbothherlegs · 28/10/2024 21:18

It's a no from me.

I did however grow up with an Emera which you might like? Still rare (I've only ever known the one) but a bit more... name-y.
