Like other posters of a certain age…..Dawson’s Creek. It’s not my cup of tea but definitely not a horrible name.

SouperWoman · 28/10/2024 00:20

I know a Dawson. He’s lovely 😀 It’s a good name - ignore the haters @OnNaturesCourse

MoneyMill · 27/10/2024 23:48

I'd be worried about Daw as a nickname.
In Ireland Daw is a derogatory term, ie a fool, eejit

My other DCs all have American style or really unusual names too so I guess it's maybe just something I didn't know I liked.. But now it's been pointed out 😂 I guess that's my style.

I'm not keen on "normal" or "common" names like David, John etc etc. Don't know why but they've just never been my vibe.

If I like Dawson what else would anyone suggest?

There’s a whole world of names between “David, John etc” and American-sounding surnames used for names (Dawson). The former really aren’t “common or normal”… In fact, I’ve not heard of a baby being called either David or John for for decades.

GirlOfThe70s · 27/10/2024 13:33

@Vroomfondleswaistcoat - "shut that door" was Larry Grayson, not Les Dawson.

I didn't say it was. But Daw will equal Door in many people's minds and 'shut that door' will be said enough for them to snigger. Nobody will remember 'shut that door' as a catchphrase.

GirlOfThe70s · 27/10/2024 13:33

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 27/10/2024 13:18

Sounds like it will just lead to lots of 'shut that door!' jokes.

And Daw (door) isn't a NN. It's a shortening. Nicknames are Fudge, Pumpkin, Shorty, Flip etc. Sorry, it's a bugbear of mine!

Purplecatshopaholic · 27/10/2024 13:15

I like Dawson actually. NN could be Son/Sonnie if you don’t like Daw.

JimNast · 27/10/2024 13:10

But they would about Jameson, Leeson and MacArthur.

LudwigsWife · 27/10/2024 07:24

Oh my goodness, the whole "I hate surnames as first names" brigade always show up for names like this. Unless a name would cause serious offence or bullying of the child, why can't people accept that tastes different and that's a GOOD thing. Also nobody ever says this about James, Lee and Arthur which are surnames too.

Would be so boring to have everyone named the same, not to mention confusing. Dawson is a perfectly good name OP.

FFSWherearemyglasses · 27/10/2024 07:15

Les, Charlotte, ‘s Creek …. I’ve heard worse but these are not the best visions that this name drums up 🥴

PuppyMonkey · 27/10/2024 07:10

I was fascinated what would come up first when you google Les Dawson… turns out it’s this. Grin

NewName24 · 27/10/2024 00:16

Another who really doesn't like people using surnames for first names.
Glad you've gone off it.

OhTheSilence · 26/10/2024 23:59

I prefer Pacey.

I'm yes I'd immediately think "why not pacey"

Ah pacey!

OhTheSilence · 26/10/2024 23:59

I prefer Pacey.

OnNaturesCourse · 26/10/2024 23:41

I don't know who that is either 😂

I've never seen Dawson Creek so don't know if that's a good or bad thing lol and had never heard of Les Dawson. Googled him and still a bit clueless.

Les is Charlotte Dawson dad

OnNaturesCourse · 26/10/2024 23:38

The NN Daws is off putting if I'm honest. My DCs all have short names that don't have any linked NNs. I'm not a fan of shortened names so that could be a problem.

OP posts:
welshpolarbear · 26/10/2024 23:35

Reminds me of Dawson Creek too. God I loved that show!

But your child's gen won't have a clue! It's actually quite cute and the name will absolutely grow on him.

Just make sure you like the nickname Daws as it'll undoubtedly be shortened to that.

Tbf none of your child's peers will have heard of Les or creek

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 26/10/2024 23:29

I love the surname style name as first names. There are a few little Greyson's running around here, so why not Dawson.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 26/10/2024 23:29

In that case I agree with @BoleynMemories13 that Dylan has a similar sound and vibe, without being so obviously a surname (Bob Dylan aside🤣 - but he named himself after Dylan Thomas). Maybe Tristan as well?

But if it’s your absolute fave, Dawson isn’t awful -it’s easy to say and spell and likely a number of the boys in his class will have similar surname type names so he’ll fit right in.

AutumnLeaves24 · 26/10/2024 12:08

creek

though thats probably just us <ahem> older posters!

I'm not sure about it as a name without that thought?!

We are not that old!! 😳

3peassuit · 26/10/2024 23:26

I'm not keen on it. How about Daniel or David.
