Bunty. I’ve known two, one child, one woman of about 60 who still owned about 20 horses. She was pure jolly hockeysticks and pony club. Old school hunting (I don’t approve but she did) fearless and mad as a hatter.

The aim of this post is to make fun of names that are 'try hard posh' no?

That's not how I've taken it and I also have a Hugo who's nearly 15 now. I think it's funny how some of us are as I said upthread, guilty as charged!

My Hugo is actually a member of the Pony Club, he lives for it, and he and his brother George (also on 'the list' along with their middle names) had their births were actually announced in The Times and not the Telegraph as mentioned 😂 I don't feel mocked or annoyed just typical of my species and believe me I don't have the energy to try hard at anything right now even if I wanted to 😂 lighten up!

Where is the name Hugo being bullied? 😳

Birth announcements in the Telegraph are a good place to start. 😀

I'm getting quite annoyed with the name Hugo always being bullied here. We actually have a Hugo and are definitely not posh and know many little Hugos in different countries with normal parents. No idea what this pony club is.

Jessamine was (I think) the name of the girl who lived at the Big House in the village in the later Milly-Molly-Mandy books. Her mother drove a car and would pile the village children in for picnics in the countryside. This would have been the 20s, I guess.

Definitely Annabel and Arabella. Philippa too, perhaps. Boys, absolutely Jonty. And Rupert.

30 years ago I would have said Oliver, but everybody's called Oliver now.

nameXname · 26/10/2024 19:03

Many of these are very modern.
If you think back to - for example - to the likes of Betjemen (surely the essential jolly hockey sticks poet? - though his own daughter was called Candida) then you get:
Joan
Beryl
Judith
Gillian
Daphne
Marjorie
Betty
Irene
Valerie

Of the same era, names such as Elizabeth, Catherine (various spellings), Anne, Louise, Victoria, Jane, Mary were/are pretty perennial and classless

Nicebloomers · 26/10/2024 18:59

Sophie
Hannah

Felicity but alway Flick
Bunty, Buffy, Mimi, Tiggy (none of which correspond with actual name)
