Can't decide name and it's driving me mad

Hi all :) I've named changed because this is so outing.

So I'm due my second boy next year, we already have Oscar. Our surname is Cunningham. DH loves Stanley but I'm just not sure. DS has told my mum and DH's mum that the baby is called Stanley (our mistake for talking about names in front of him!🤦‍♀️) and the reactions weren't great. I think that's putting me off the name too which I know it shouldn't but I can't help it. What do you all think of Stanley?

Any suggestions for names? We also need a middle name😫

Names that we liked but don't anymore are:

Jack
Alfie
Harry
Ernie
Louis
Charlie
Jasper
Felix

There's an endless list of names that DH doesn't like but I'd be here all night🤦‍♀️

I just don't think we're ever going to have a name that I love which is such a shame because I love Oscar's name so much🙁

I think Stanley goes really well with your surname however personally I’d probably veer more towards Henry, for example. I think you have the kind of surname that calls for a traditional first name.

WhatASadLittleLifeJayne · 24/10/2024 20:55

Stanley is probably the second ugliest name possible (sorry!). Second to Ronnie&Reggie tied at ultimate worst.

We had Oscar on our list, it’s such the polar opposite to Stanley if you ask me. A lovely friendly happy name to suit all ages.

Others in same vein:
Joel (perfection)
Noah
Rory
Felix
Evan
Luca/s

Louoby · 24/10/2024 20:51

Stanley and Oscar don't really go. Stanley is very old fashioned. It's hard when one is set on a name. Could you compromise and go with Stanley as a middle name? Other names you could go consider

Otis
Jasper
Toby
Max
Ellis
Shay
Beau
Zac

Good luck x

I like Stanley! I also like Sidney and Ernest. They’re ’old man’ but still very nice names.

RosesAndHellebores · 24/10/2024 20:44

Oscar wasn't in the top 200 in 1850. But below is an old MNet thread .thread www.mumsnet.com/talk/baby_names/2288536-Sibling-names-that-sound-nice-with-Oscar

Monvelo · 24/10/2024 20:41

My Oscar was nearly called Archie - which I now hate so glad I used the excuse of birth to overrule DH! I don't like the name Stanley personally. What about Rupert or Thomas?

SorrowsPrayers · 24/10/2024 20:40

I think Stanley is great! Jasper and Ernie are also good.

RosesAndHellebores · 24/10/2024 20:38

I like Stanley
I don't know any Oscars with brothers.

Oscar makes me think of Oscar Wilde. I'll Google names of that era and come back.

whatisthebabyname · 24/10/2024 20:37

Thanks for all the suggestions, they are very helpful😊

Oh god no to Stanley! It really does not go with Oscar.

If Cunningham is your DH’s surname then he has to compromise, sorry.

I think Jasper is too similar to Oscar.

Felix Cunningham
Leo Cunningham
Theo Cunningham
Jago Cunningham

Those are the same vibe and go so well with the surname.

Stanley Cunningham is just too much, it sounds like a footballer from the 1940s in long flannel shorts 😳

Well that's the image in my head now🤣🤣🤣I'll tell DH, maybe it'll put him off it!

Stanley is badd, don't do it.

Noah?
Ryan - my son's name haha)
I also love Jasper and think Jacob and Max would also work.

Oscar is such a lovely name by the way

Scutterbug · 24/10/2024 20:28

Oscar and Jasper go so well together! What about Isaac?

Bristolnewcomer · 24/10/2024 20:28

Luke
Wilkie
Tristan
Ethan
Frankie
Jago

whatisthebabyname · 24/10/2024 20:27

Tbh I still like the other names we had and I like a lot of these suggestions but DH is the issue. He loves Stanley and can't see past that being his name.

boysmuminherts · 24/10/2024 20:23

But Stanley is nice with your surname. It's a good, solid name. Ignore your parents.

MissyB1 · 24/10/2024 20:22

I don't like Stanley. Other suggestions;
Wilfred
Ralph
Frankie
Conrad
Jonah

LittleSparklyStar · 24/10/2024 20:22

I think Oscar and Jasper sound like brothers

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 24/10/2024 20:19

Other than Ernie I like all the names in the list of ones you no longer like.
Don’t like Stanley.

DramaAlpaca · 24/10/2024 20:17

I really like Stanley. It's not my usual style, but I like it. It's strong and not cutesy. Stan is great, very cool I think.

Entertainmentcentral · 24/10/2024 20:17

I don't see the attraction of Stanley.

What about Sebastian? Seb is kind of cool, like Olly, and it goes with your surname.
