What do you think: Wesley or Julian?

These boy names are not extremely common but also not 'out there' where I'm from but I wondered what their popularity and associations are in the UK? There have been names I liked that my (English) DH informs me are too poncy or too common or too weird so I wanted to run these two past some other UK natives for perspective.

DH likes both names but thinks one might be considered odd and the other too popular. What do you think?

i like Wesley. Twas my grandmother's maiden name.

julian makes me think Famous Five.

itsahardknocklife · 26/04/2008 12:22

lol at Julian sounding like a bed wetter!

KatieScarlett2833 · 26/04/2008 12:09

A "Wesley" round here is someone who is thought of as being a bit of a drip, sorry.

Nancy66 · 26/04/2008 11:58

Not made on either.
Wesley sounds like some kid from a dodgy estate and Julian sounds like a bed wetter.

itsahardknocklife · 26/04/2008 11:10

I don't like either, to be honest. If I had to choose, though, I would go for Wesley. Julian is a bit...well...camp. Not that there is anything wrong with that. (runs off before she digs herself any further into a hole)

bandgeek · 26/04/2008 11:10

Julian.

Makes me think of Jools Holland

johnso · 26/04/2008 11:08

If I had to chose, then Julian

DoubleBluff · 26/04/2008 11:06

Like Julian, not keen on Wesly. Knew a Wesley at school and he was a bit odd.

amitymama · 26/04/2008 11:03

So the measure of a boy/man's name is whether it sounds good as a news presenter, pilot, PM, boxer or surgeon? Hmmm...

Does this apply to girls names as well? What professions are we supposed to use to pigeonhole them?

How about "And Introducing Julian Smith - Heavyweight Champion of the World!

"And this is Mr Wesley Smith - he will be operating on you today"

amitymama · 25/04/2008 22:58

Thanks for all the (constructive) input!

DH thinks he is leaning towards Julian now. I'm still not decided and need more time to think about it. Going to keep looking for other names as well. DH keeps suggesting Rocco or Cosmo so he's of no use.

I prefer Julian.

Pinkchampagne · 25/04/2008 19:33

Not keen on either for a child, but out of the two, Julian is slightly better than Wesley IMO.

janeite · 25/04/2008 17:13

I like Wesley; I used to teach a gorgous one.

I also like Westley, a la The Princess Bride.

I don't like Julian - I think a) Famous Five and b) hairdressers. Sorry!

Wesley really is lovely though.

cece · 25/04/2008 17:08

makealist,

I am shocked too that so many people have said they don't like the name Wesley. I am very jealous that you managed to call your DS Wesley, as it is my favourite boys names

amitymama · 25/04/2008 17:03

makealist, i'm sorry you have been offended. people can be quite blunt about names. i expected people to say they preferred one name or the other (or neither) but not to say things like "it's horrid" or "dreadful." don't let it get you down. i'm sure we'd think others' kids names are horrid. :p

Ds2 is called Wesley.

branflake81 · 25/04/2008 08:56

Wesley is really awful. And Wes is even worse.

Julian is ok but does sound a bit wet and reminds me of the famous five.

jk1 · 24/04/2008 19:45

I really like Julian think it is a great name and has good shortenings. Where we live it would not be odd in the slightest.

Not keen on Wesley but biased by a bad boy in our town whilst I was growing up!

cece · 24/04/2008 18:19

Wesley is my favourite boyus name but DH wouldn't have it at all

CountessDracula · 24/04/2008 18:15

Wesley is dreadful

Julian is ok has nice shortened versions ie Jules
(my brother)

edam · 24/04/2008 18:12

Hello MI, no, sadly still not well. Just my luck to get the winter vomiting virus when it's not even winter any more!

QueenTaLcY · 24/04/2008 18:11

Julian

or Jude

collision · 24/04/2008 18:10

ooh gobble....havent seen you for ages!

I like being a namechanger for a while but always go back to collision!!

Sometimes I think you have to put names into a situation ie Pilot or journalist

someone on here did the test as

'Thank you, Wesley Dodson, our new Prime Minister......!!'
