Thoughts on the names Henley or hedley. We live in the UK. Please be really honest.

What does that mean? This is my first time using Mumsnet. What is the problem with active threads being .... Active?

Active threads isn't being active if all it's full of is repeats of the same thread. For people who want to read a roundup of other things (gardening, AIBU, feminism, cat threads, etc) that are being pushed out of the way for thread after thread of the same thread with one word different.

You've used some sort of social media before, yes? So you know that starting eleventy billion new posts about the same thing will fill up people's newsfeed with that, and writing one post will mean people can see things from other people and have a continuous conversation on the topic you've posted about instead of a bitty one that's all over the place. It's the same on MN, except MN doesn't have an algorithm to minimise the effect of people who do this.

If you haven't used social media, you must have email or you wouldn't be able to sign up to MN. You will know that sending a load of emails to the same recipients with exactly the same message will fill up people's inboxes and annoy people.

C'mon. You know this. People have tried pointing it out to you gently.

There was a man called Hedley working in the same office in my first job. it suited him. Other men about the same age as him had names like Brian, Barry, Neil and Colin.
Henley is a nice place to visit but doesn't seem like a person's name.

I think Henley sounds like the choice of an influencer’. Hedley is not good. Will he get called ‘Hed’ for short? Even if it’s not a plan at the moment I think that’ll happen. He’ll be teased, especially if god forbid he has a ginormous noggin. Another post said you liked Austin? Austin is miles above either of these; it’s smart, but quite modern/cool. 😀

Thank you

Henley is ok, Hedley is awful. I’ve seen your other threads and I think Xavier is best, followed by Austin, then Augustus then Henley, then Hedley. If it was August instead of Augustus that would be number 1!

Thank you for your feedback. That is really helpful ☺️

Right but you're blowing up "active threads" for everyone with all these separate threads. 🙄

My grandfather's name was Hedley. He always went by Peter though. He was born circa 1920.

Not keen on either. They sound like cartoon or children's book characters.

NoSquirrels · 23/10/2024 09:22

Henley - posh, boating regatta.
Hedley - Australian true crime investigative journalist podcaster.

Not a fan of either. Go with Austin or one of the others. Or use Henry.

Snorlaxo · 23/10/2024 09:19

The problem with place names is that people will wonder if you conceived him there. There’s probably a Hedley somewhere but Henley is famous for the Regatta . There would be a high likelihood of Hedley having the nickname Hed which I wouldn’t be keen on.

MulderitsmeX · 23/10/2024 09:19

Hedley sounds like a Harry Potter character
Henley is a regatta.

Both awful

I didnt see your other threads but the other names i think youre considering are all much better, Austin is lovely, Xavier is lovely. Augustus is fine but not to my tatse although I like Gus.

Hadley is ok, not really to my taste but it's somewhat popular now.

FusilliGerri · 23/10/2024 09:15

Henley is ok, Hedley is awful.

I agree. I wouldn't want to be called Henley though. It feels like a name that people would constantly be saying 'what was that?' when you introduce yourself.

Manchesterbythesea · 23/10/2024 09:14

They are awful. Are they actually names?

MiraculousLadybug · 23/10/2024 09:14

Also have you considered Hadley? It sounds better than Hedley to my ear. Henley to me will always be Henley-on-Thames.

MiraculousLadybug · 23/10/2024 09:13

Iwouldliketogoonholiday · 23/10/2024 08:42

Yes I probably should have but didn't want to get them muddled up. Thought seperate would help me track the general mood for a particular name.

Benshen · 23/10/2024 08:46

I can't remember from your other thread but I recall that one of your other children has a name that is posh and aspirational? And Henley matches that imo, because Henley is a posh place with a regatta! I'd steer clear if I was you.

35pEnergyDrink · 23/10/2024 08:44

I know a Henley (woman) and a Hedley (man); I think both are ok. Poor Hedley gets his name shortened to Hed or Hedders though, which sound awful!

Iwouldliketogoonholiday · 23/10/2024 08:42

FinallyMovingHouse · 23/10/2024 08:39

I'm sure that someone else has pointed this out already, but you do know that you can just put your name list on 1 thread instead of starting multiples ones don't you?

Def not Hedley for all sorts of reasons. Henley ok ish but might be misheard as Henry

Figgygal · 23/10/2024 08:42

Neither are great
Henley is a place
My husbands grandad was called Hedley he was born around 1910 the name is dying out for a reason

Barkingdogbarks · 23/10/2024 08:41

Henley? Like the place?
Henley icecream is much sought after round here. If you don’t mind that it’s fine. Or you don’t plan on your child hanging out in the West Midlands?

I think it’s a very good name for a bear. 🐻 (don’t know why)

AnellaA · 23/10/2024 08:40

Ludicrous

DoAWheelie · 23/10/2024 08:40

I'd assume it was Henry with a lisp tbh

ThornVampire · 23/10/2024 08:39

Sounds like a car

Oh yes, I have an Austin hedley
