I dont know, because its and Irish name? My personal opinion. Could be wrong.

It is not an Irish name.

Diggby · 30/10/2024 21:45

Emmeline is lovely.

Don't like Islie as it will be pronounced "I lie" rather than "Eye lee."

Edmund is fantastic as is Benedict.

Bazinga007 · 30/10/2024 21:42

I like Emmaline, Nevaeh is a travesty of a name.

Bestfootfwd · 30/10/2024 21:39

I love Emmeline Celeste!
I also like Edmund Johan.

17caterpillars1mouse · 30/10/2024 21:11

Islie - never heard of it before but not sure I like it - bit of a Leslie / Izzie mash up?

Emmeline - lovely name with cute shortenings. The best of your choices by far

Safia - it's OK, not to my taste

Neveah - not a fan. The heaven spelt backwards is cheesy as, plus there is one in dds swimming class who is mouthy and always messing about so I associate it with her, a rude brat

Hendrick - I really like Hendrick

Keiththecatwithamagichat · 30/10/2024 21:02

I've read through your posts and I like Benedict and Odette from the names you're putting out there, they remind me of Shakespeare type names. I also like Emmeline.

Brother to Magenta?

I know someone who has Zoe Magenta. It really suits her!

I like Hendrix for a boy rather than hendrick. I like emmeline. Saffiya is nice but only if you are from a culture that uses that name, not if you're white British. Isla is pretty overused and boring, islie is too made up.

Sophia is fine. I wouldn't spell it differently.

patchoulirose · 29/10/2024 09:04

Dislike the others though

patchoulirose · 29/10/2024 09:03

Emmeline is really pretty!

I like Nya (I know one who is the loveliest person)
Hate Carmel.
I like Odette and NN Odie or Etty
I like Edmund and Edgar

A childhood friend of mine is called Edmund but he always goes by Eddie or Ed now, maybe his mum calls him Edmund if she’s cross with him. I knew an Edgar too and he was equally Ed and Eddie but as his name seemed shorter than eg Edmund, he was often called Edgar.

I never knew Aramis was one of the Three Musketeers.

Edmund is the best of your boys names by a country mile. It it does go well with Johan.

I like Emmeline too. I am sorry that I don’t like your other girls choices. What about:
Nia instead of Nyah

Sasha
Sarah (a classic like the other two)
Susannah which could be shortened to Sukey or Susie
Saskia

alternatives with Soraya which is very pretty but as others said, very much an Asian name.

I like Nia, I have added Celeste to my list. Emmeline Celeste, what do you think to that?

Johan is just the German version of John. I’m not sure why you’d use a German name unless you have particular links to the country or it’s a family name.

Edmund John is a very solid sensible name and what I would go for.

Edited

My name is French (Eloise), and I am English born in the UK with no family from France. I like the name, regardless of where it’s from.

That is quite an obscure word to most English speakers. It may well be a very common insult in Yiddish, but it hasn't crossed over into English, so a child named Hendrix or Hendrick or Henrik, etc is hardly going to feel any adverse effect.

I'm sure there are quite a few common names in English that mean something like menstrual cup or poopoohead or dog food or fur ball in another language. It's not necessary to delve into that, though, or prioritise finding a name that has no other meaning in any of the worlds hundreds of languages.

I saw something once where an Asian (Japanese maybe?) Person explained that the sound EE means shit in their language. (It might be a different sound, I can't remember clearly) and went ont o give examples of names that sound like something else. Like Emily = dogshit or something 😆 literally nobody in england would bat an eye at that name though. I also know Thai girls called Porn and War!

Aligirlbear · 24/10/2024 19:18

If you called out Hendrick or even Hendrix I’d think you were calling for a gin rather than the music connotation ! Sorry 😔

Shmendrik is the Yiddish for an idiot/stupid person/jerk.

It's a very common insult and your child really isn't going to thank you for actually naming them something that sounds so similar.

It's at times like this I have greater insight into why certain countries make you pick a name from an approved list!

There's also the Italian versions, Carmello and Carmella.

Carmel is unisex (place name, like Eden and Shiloh)

Carmel is very much a RC name honouring Our Lady of Mount Carmel, a name of Mary. It used to be very popular in Ireland, maybe up to about the 70s, so it would be considered borderline granny. I have never in my life met a male Carmel.

Are you thinking of Carmen?

I like Safia but have never seen it spelled like that, only Safiya, Safiyah, and Safiah. But I don’t think that matters much, all those spellings are anglicisations of non-Anglo names.

Islie I don’t dislike but it’s definitely a new name .. Emmeline sounds good and has great connotations.

Neveah I actually like as a name-sound. But people will make a lot of assumptions about your intelligence and outlooks - probably unfair, but they will.

Hendrick is a good solid name, you could also consider Henrik: really good solid Swedish name
