Little brother's name

We are struggling with names for our boy due early next year, he'll be a little brother to Elizabeth who we are calling Elsie while she's little. If this baby had been a girl she would be Beatrice or Dorothy, but we're not sure now it is a boy.

My favourites that DH has vetoed are Arthur (he says too trendy), Edward (doesn't like matching initial with sister), Fraser (flat no) and Joseph (too biblical!?). His favourites are Jonathan, Harry, or Benjamin, which to be fair we had agreed on for our first but have since become friends with a Ben so I now find it weird!

There are lots more we each kind of like but we're not finding much in common! We had a much better list of names we both liked for girls but I feel like we've been through every boys name going now and need to start fresh. I would have said our taste was established but not too popular names but I don't know any more!

Family names we can't use are Alexander, Charlie, Thomas and Sebastian

John goes better with Elizabeth imo than Jonathan - John was nearly as timeless as Elizabeth until the last decade or two, although it is underused now (Elizabeth being the ultimate timeless girls name- lovely choice!)

Edward and Joseph would be the other obvious options - neither have ever left the Top 100 so both pair really well with Elizabeth (Joseph as it is Biblical like Elizabeth, Edward as it is Royal like Elizabeth). Either would be a great pick imo - I don’t really understand your husbands objections as several of your choices are Biblical and anecdotally I share an initial with my brother and it was really handy for sharing/passing down labelled stuff (eg. at school) and it never caused any issues as we were Mr/Miss on post for example.

Other classic timeless boys ideas (that haven’t ever left the Top 100 - but most are Biblical, sorry!) - James, William, Daniel, George, David, Michael.

Noah?

BoleynMemories13 · 21/10/2024 20:25

Henry nn Harry would work well, especially as you say you your DH really likes Harry. I feel a full name with nn option would work best with Elizabeth/Elsie.

I'm surprised he has vetoed Joseph for being "too biblical" but is keen on Benjamin. Benjamin screams Biblical to me (not that that's a bad thing, it's a lovely name, but it is very traditionally biblical). Benjamin does go nicely with Elizabeth, but if you are now close to a Ben it could feel a little odd. Only you two knows whether you would be comfortable using it or not.

If you like Nicholas he could be Nicky for short while he's little? I agree Nick sound too old for a young boy, but short forms evolve over time to suit different ages.

How about Benedict instead of Benjamin?

Also Tobias, Toby

Firsttimebabymummy · 21/10/2024 19:24

Really like Jonathan!

Joshua?

martinisforeveryone · 21/10/2024 19:23

Ivan, Guy, Leo, Robert or Frederick

Elizabeth is a biblical name, @ab03 .

Yes, I think I am drawn to biblical names! But I think the problem with some of them is that DH can't think of other references and thinks they're mainly used by very religious parents. Not saying he makes any sense!

Thank you for all the suggestions, I'm going to put together a new list I can run through with DH! I like Isaac but think DH already said that was too biblical as well! I like Jonah and Joel as they're similar to Joseph and I think go well with Elsie but imagine DH might have the same problem with them.

Also like Nicholas but struggle with the idea of a baby Nick, it feels too grown up!

Could Jonathan be shortened to Joe? I don't really like John/Jonny for the respective boringness/condom associations! I quite like Jonty though

We haven't talked about Jasper, Rupert or Francis at all so will definitely suggest them. Also haven't talked about Frederick as I quite liked Alfred or Wilfred instead to get to Freddie, but DH thinks they're too trendy.

For some reason I find William a bit boring, even though it's not much different to other names I do like! And a few others mentioned I like but are friends/friends' children (Dominic, Peter, Christopher, George)

Definitely have some more to talk about though, thanks all!

Jonathan is a great name, very simpatico with Elizabeth. Long due a revival. Elsie and Jonny are very cute together.

I agree. I also knew a Jonty (full name) years ago and always thought that was pretty cool.

Elsie and Jonty?

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 21/10/2024 17:39

Stephen/Stevie?

MassiveSalad22 · 21/10/2024 17:29

William. I know you can’t use Charlie but I was going to say you can’t anyway - can’t do consecutive monarchs! I find skipping one monarch to William acceptable though and it is a lovely name.

Boys names are SO hard, feels like there’s so much less choice than girls!

I’d go Elsie and Nicholas, personally. I think Nicholas is the perfect name (couldn’t use it for mine!).

Or Dominic??

TripleCarber · 21/10/2024 17:25

I immediately thought Francis would be amazing for you but noticed a previous poster beat me too it. Could always use Frank as a nickname.

Some other suggestions:
Elizabeth and Isaac

Elizabeth and Grant
Elizabeth and Wilfred
Elizabeth and Peter

Elsie and Billy sound cute

Joseph.

Too Biblical. According to OP's DH.

OP your DH sounds like mine, I had Samuel vetoed as "sounds like a middle class person trying to be working class" (no, I have no idea either).

One of my favourite boys names ever is Willem. Another is Rupert. And they both sound sweet with Elizabeth…

Elsie and Roo is super cute.

Hughs · 21/10/2024 15:18

I love Jonathan. Names with a similar vibe that I also like - Simon and Robert.
