Help me decide! Older sister is Clara. I love both names.

some people on MN really reach when thinking up reasons why a child might be teased over a bog standard name.

Partially that (I agree it’s an old fashioned term now, although one that teens might become aware of if they watch classic films). But “loose” is also short/slang for diarrhoea/loose stools in some parts of the country.

Edited

Ok. Dd is 17 and a Lucy and has never been teased for those reasons. I don't think any of the Lucys in her year have. There's a teacher at their school who has a Lucy. She was a mum at the same primary school. I doubt she'd have picked it if kids get bullied for it because of diarrhoea or harlot women.

Do you mean because people used to use Loose to mean sleeping around? I don't think people say that any more. I'm in my 50s and don't know anyone who uses that to describe women and I definitely don't think young people do.

This is quite a hard one for me - I honestly love both. I think I might be leaning slightly towards Emily this time, though I'm not sure why.

Redmat · 15/10/2024 22:43

Emily is so much nicer than Lucy.

ODFOx · 15/10/2024 22:31

Emily pairs better with Clara.
Both are lovely names.

Of the two, Emily by far. Sorry to be negative but I’ve never understood the love for Lucy - I get that it’s classic but there are lots of classic names, so why would you choose a name where the first syllable sounds like “loose” ? Plus Emily has great historical namesakes like Brontë, Dickinson and Davison etc. Imo there’s a reason it’s generally always been more popular than Lucy.

Both are lovely names, but I find Emily a bit dull (I’m a teacher and have taught loads!). Lucy gets my vote.

I do like Emma and Lucinda as alternatives, too.

I requested that 🫣 Wished I hadn’t posted a pic and felt sensitive that so many were picking the name Heidi. I’m sure Heidi is not it.

I love Heidi, but I don’t think you can have it with Clara

Twoshoesnewshoes · 15/10/2024 19:27

They’re both quite popular names, I voted Emily because Lucy seems like a name for a little girl to me personally.
but if it was short for Lucille that would be lovely, as she has the choice of a more grown up (IMO) name if preferred.

Threesmycrowd · 15/10/2024 19:24

Love lucy! Such a pretty classic name. Nancy, Alice, Rosie/Rosalie feel similar to me. I think Emily is okay.

DrizzleMySwizzle · 15/10/2024 19:22

Emily is a drippy name. Would much prefer to be called Lucy.

martinisforeveryone · 15/10/2024 19:21

Regardless of what family decide consider schoolmates' shortenings or nicknames. You really don't have any control over those years and decisions.

Emily has some fabulous connections and Lucia is nice.

StressedQueen · 15/10/2024 19:20

Love Lucy and sometimes regret not using it 😞

But Emily is nice enough too. They're both absolutely fine names and go well with Clara, I just prefer Lucy more!

RVEllacott · 15/10/2024 19:17

Emily is a bit wet and fussy IMO so I prefer Lucy but I think there are nicer names which would fit with Clara. I'd go with Emma, Eva or Nina.

JoJothegerbil · 15/10/2024 19:09

I have an Emily so that's my vote. Lucy is also one of my middle names so I like that one too.

Nicebloomers · 15/10/2024 19:04

Lucille is a much nicer choice.

notatinydancer · 15/10/2024 18:33

Clara is slightly unusual. What about Emmeline ?

Greenerstreet · 15/10/2024 18:29

Redpoppy21 · 15/10/2024 18:01

Lucille is definitely an option. Would still call her Lucy most of the time.

I think Lucille nickname Lucy is perfect!

That's OK. I wondered if trolls had turned up or something. You have similar tastes to me as I considered Heidi too

shoopshoopdedoo · 15/10/2024 18:15

Both lovely! I’d pick Lucy I think

Redpoppy21 · 15/10/2024 18:08

PumpkinSpicePie · 15/10/2024 16:53

I like both equally sorry. Dd17 is a Lucy and has never been teased about her name. Neither have the other ones in her year.

There are way more Emily’s around than Lucys! Emily has been in top 20 for at least the last 30 years. Lucy left the top 20 in 2010 and is now similar popularity to Clara. For that reason I would go Lucy.

That’s how I feel too. I know of a lot of Emily’s ages 20s - 40s. I do know of about 4 little Lucy’s through acquaintances/ friends but I don’t see them often.

Both are lovely but with Clara I'd prefer Emilia or Lucille or Emmeline or Lucinda

Lucille is definitely an option. Would still call her Lucy most of the time.
