Marigold, Romilly - any others?

What are your thoughts on Romilly ("Romy") or Marigold ("Goldie") for a baby sister to Clara? Any other ideas? I also love Clementine and Margot but my DH isn't keen. We like old fashioned English names that aren't overdone but are not totally weird - feels like a hard balance!

Romily/Romy- I either read Roomy or Romany for some reason, so not keen. Also seems more modern than Clara.

Clara and Marigold- together they could be pet cow names! I like them separately though.

Coralie (Coral or Cora)
Magnolia (Maggie)
Violet/Violetta
Fleur
Doris (Dotty/Dot)
Hazel
Autumn

Love Clara and Romilly.

I'm not keen on Romilly, Marigold - rubber gloves, Goldie sounds like a labrador.

I have a Clara and I don't like either of those, sorry!

What about

Emilia

Eleanor

TripleCarber · 15/10/2024 19:29

Meredith nickname Edie? Clara and Edie sound so cute together.

I do love both Romilly and Marigold, I think Romilly goes better with Clara.

Other suggestions:
Blythe
Joanie
Amelie

LattewithAlmondCroissant · 15/10/2024 19:27

Also, she goes by Romilly rather than Romy (we weren't sure if she would want to shorten it or not, but she prefers Romilly).

Some similar names we considered for DC2 (a while ago) were Emmeline and Ottilie, although I think these are quite popular now in some areas.

LattewithAlmondCroissant · 15/10/2024 19:25

We have a Romilly - it's a lovely name and suits our daughter well!

WeeOrcadian · 15/10/2024 19:13

Marigold - rubber gloves

I quite like Marigold but Goldie sounds like a puppy not a child. Not keen on Romilly.

What about Marianne?

I love Marianne, so stylish

BoleynMemories13 · 15/10/2024 06:10

I like Romilly, but not so fond of Romy.

Marigold/Goldie is terrible.

daisychain233 · 14/10/2024 23:01

Love both but Romilly pips it for me - it’s on our list if we have another girl!

RogueFemale · 14/10/2024 22:04

I like Daphne. How about Venetia or Sibylla?

stinkingbishop · 14/10/2024 20:10

Mum of a Romilly. I confirm, splendid name. But don't think you're going to be able to prescribe a NN. I tried Mimi, Romy, Milly, RoRo...nothing stuck. Her friends call her Rom and her Dad calls her RomCom/CDRom, argh!

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 14/10/2024 19:48

I’d expect a Clara to have a sister named something like Louisa, Helena, Alice, Lydia, Eleanor, Maria, Julia, Anna or Beatrice. Or if you want to go down the floral route - Rosamund, Rosalind or Lillian. I feel like Clara has a kind of “classic Victoriana” style - so those are the sort of names I’d use for a sister. Romilly is lovely but feels a bit more modern somehow? - but Marigold goes the other way and is very niche retro. However of the two I’d definitely pick Romilly! Emilia works slightly better in style with Clara to me- but I agree she will often get Amelia.

Moreteaandchocolate · 14/10/2024 18:33

Marigold - not too keen and I don’t like Goldie
Romilly - lovely and I love Romy
Rosemary - gorgeous and you can still use Romy
Frances - a bit stuffy and old fashioned to me
Daphne nice, but Daff / Daffy not good…
Emilia - beautiful and I love Emmy - some misspellings will happen but easy to correct

Emilia is a lovely name but also very popular (if that's what you mean by overdone). It's risen swiftly the last few years and is currently number 37 in England and Wales. I think Daphne is my favourite from all the options you've suggested.

Greeneyegirl · 14/10/2024 14:01

I had romily/ Romy on my list and Clara.

Other names on our list were Posy, India, Dahlia and Margaret nn Tiggy.

We called our daughter Blythe as an under used old fashioned name

boysmuminherts · 14/10/2024 13:50

I love Polly
Goldie is a bit porn star IMHO. Marigold and Romilly are both lovely names.

Desperateforababa · 14/10/2024 13:48

Thanks everyone - Mumsnet is great for this kind of thing! I also love Frances (again DH isn't keen). From other names suggested, we also like Rosemary and Daphne.

Thoughts on Emilia? Totally different vibe but that was the other one we were mulling over but wondering if everyone would misspell it as Amelia.
