How would you perceive a Molly?

I love the name. Think it's understated & would travel well. Also think it's quite classless & can't be judged too quickly.
Any opinions?!

A million ?

Well, you know, feels like that. One or two in every class, in every year.

deliwoman1 · 13/10/2024 07:57

I don’t love it OP. But that’s my taste.

To me Molly (and most ‘ee’ sounding names) are too soft. It reminds me vaguely of ‘dolly’ and rag dolls. I do also think of the drug! But that’s my misspent youth talking. 😬

I believe the person makes the name though so if you love it go for it.

I teach a million teenage Mollys.
It's a forgettable name, like Ellie, Evie, Ava.

A million ?

Commonsenseisnotsocommon · 13/10/2024 07:05

I personally don't like it at all and think whilst it's cute, wouldn't stand up well if dc had higher career aspirations in life eg "our CEO, Molly...." just doesn't sound likely. However, I'm one person, my opinion counts for nothing if you like it.

Ygfrhj · 13/10/2024 06:56

To me it comes across quite posh and middle/upper class as well as childish.

Leeloo1233 · 13/10/2024 06:42

I thought it was unusable because of the MDMA connection but i was so wrong - now i know several Molly's and havent thought of it once. Go for it, i like it a lot!

BeautyPageantDropout · 12/10/2024 19:20

my grandmother was a Molly so I think of her. A capable no-nonsense country woman. The sort who'd be pulling a lamb out of a ewe with one hand and whipping up a plate of sandwiches with the other.

garlictwist · 12/10/2024 16:14

It makes me think of MDMA but perhaps that's due to my misspent youth...

1AngelicFruitCake · 12/10/2024 16:12

I think Molly sounds like a sweet, lovely person. Despite that I know two and both are madams!

bengalcat · 12/10/2024 15:49

I think it’s a lovely name

Pyjamatimenow · 12/10/2024 15:46

An unfortunate urchin in a Catherine Cookson

NewDogOwner · 12/10/2024 14:11

I like her already.

BeaLola · 12/10/2024 13:49

My first thought was curly hair (!)

I like it but I love Mary

Not the point though. Is it a proper name or a diminutive/nickname?

I see it as a diminutive but a more solid one than say…Teddy, Charlie, Alfie, Albie, Archie etc

StMarieforme · 12/10/2024 12:23

Earthy. Back to nature. In tune with herself. Comfy in herself. Confident. Loving.

I have a Molly. She's wild, bonkers, hilarious and brilliant. All the Molly's I've ever known are wild and strong and brilliant! I am still absolutely in love with the name!

My auntie was just like this, I loved her. She was Mary but adopted the name Molly.
I really like the name and never knew about the drug nickname.

Do we really still think Molly is a diminutive and not a formal name? Surely we're past that now. Unless all of those posters wouldn't use Jack either.

Name Molly has been a stand-alone name for a long time.

Not the point though. Is it a proper name or a diminutive/nickname?

Some sites say that Jack is a stand-alone name as it doesn't have connotations to John, which has Biblical connections.

Seems over time that it's become not just a diminutive name for John but also an independent name.

I think I would prefer John as the given name ( since so many object to a NN for people in official or professional positions) and go with Jack until John was 'needed' to look and sound 'important' lol.

I wouldn’t use Jack. It’s aggressively dull.

Screamingabdabz · 11/10/2024 23:51

It reminds me of a book I had as a child ‘Milly Molly Mandy’ - she always looked like the biggest boring drip of a girl on the front cover so I never read it.

Enko · 11/10/2024 23:42

I find it a very safe kinda dull name. Like Jane, Anne, Emily.
Not offensive but nor do I think its beautiful
