If you're in the UK, how would you pronounce Asier?

Another suggestion from someone we know. It's a Basque name, and we discovered the Spanish pronunciation, but I'm really curious what comes to mind for Brits?

Also do you think it sounds too close to Vada (pronouced Vay-da) in any way?

She will be called arse-ier by some people.

Lulu1919 · 08/10/2024 17:01

Aay sir

SirChenjins · 08/10/2024 15:51

Ay-shuh - like Frasier but without the F

Yes that’s what I thought too

OneEdgySheep · 08/10/2024 16:15

I’m not sure. This one I’d have to say I’m sorry I’m not sure how to say your name if it came up on my register.
My initial thought was Az-Yair maybe as it looked French.
But I’ve taught too many Irish kids to be bothered about asking first, so I’d ask and then say it.

Ay-zee-er

Agree

Blimey that was fast! Thanks. A mix so far.

My inclination is (short) A - see - er (like Aceir, I guess), but any Basque person would tell me that's wrong! It's quite a popular name over there, but obviously anything that could be shortened to 'ass' over here is not...ideal 😂

@FraterculaArctica thanks, that's really good feedback. We're in London and there'll be a lot of diversity in her classes, so I'm hopeful.

@OldieButBaddie Vada isn't our surname. It's our DD's name! And we do call her Darth behind her back sometimes, usually post massive toddler tantrum. It fits!

Edited

@deliwoman1 I think the way you’d pronounce it is the right way. I’m not good at spelling words as I tend to think many times with my Spanish - basque hat on

def. not ay-

A-see - er is kind of what id pronounce it like.

EasterIssland · 08/10/2024 16:03

I know how to pronounce it … but I’m basque 🙃 lovely name. My son has got a basque name as well, I’ve to say British people pronounce it much better than what my dad (Spanish but not born in Basque Country) does 😃

Frowningprovidence · 08/10/2024 15:58

I would go with ass ee er if I saw it written down.

But I am sure I'd get the hang of the correct pronunciation as soon as introduced.

I normally think mn is a bit hysterical about unusual names and names from other cultures as I work in a multicultural school and they really don't register as different.

But with this particular name you run the risk of 'ass'. Although pp says that hasn't happened so probably not an issue..

Chersfrozenface · 08/10/2024 15:57

I'd always be tempted to pronounce it Ay-shur, because I had a relative called Asher, pronounced like that (a Biblical name - Welsh Nonconformist background).

SirChenjins · 08/10/2024 15:51

Ay-shuh - like Frasier but without the F

Sandysandwich · 08/10/2024 15:49

Maybe Ay zee er, but I would have to ask first as I've not heard it before and it has a lot of letter groups that can be pronounced different ways

Oldseagull · 08/10/2024 15:33

They will be called Ass.

JesusOnAYamaha · 08/10/2024 15:31

Assier

ShillyShallySherbet · 08/10/2024 15:28

Ay-see-ya

Phenomendodododooby · 08/10/2024 15:28

I’d probably pronounce it A zee air. Haven’t a clue why? 🤣

WetBandits · 08/10/2024 15:27

If it’s Spanish, I’d probably go for Ah-see-air.

I don’t think it would do terribly well in the UK, though.

SnapdragonToadflax · 08/10/2024 15:24

Maybe Ass-ee-ay? I would be very hesitant though, I've never seen it before and it could be pronounced so many different ways depending on accent.

TBH if my surname was Vada pronounced Vay-da I would call my child Darth

OldieButBaddie · 08/10/2024 14:57

A-seer

Unless you are actually Basque I would probably avoid it if he is going to grow up in the UK no one will be able to pronounce his name with any certainty!

FraterculaArctica · 08/10/2024 14:56

There is one in DD's (generally very White British) class with this name. It's nice and no one has found the pronunciation difficult.

ThatIsYucky · 08/10/2024 14:43

To rhyme with brassiere

‘Like’!

boysmuminherts · 08/10/2024 14:53

Ay see er ?
I've never heard of it though

redtrain123 · 08/10/2024 14:52

Ass - se - er?

(Not really sure)
