Thisbe - too far out?

RoseApp · 07/10/2024 10:17

So is Thisbe a no way or a may be?

Also on the list for a girl (my friend decided against all previous suggestions and is now back on the hunt for something poetic)

Xanthe - I like this one
Ruri - not sure how I feel about taking names from other cultures (Japan)
Romy
Raphaelle
Signe - she would pronounce it a bit like Sidney

the stress that’s going in to this I’m so glad I only have to name my dogs 🐶

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Also muse options - Calliope, Thalia

DisplayPurposesOnly · 07/10/2024 13:18

I quite like Thisbe, but probably best to save it for a cat.

A Shakespearean alternative: Nerissa (abbrev. Niss, Nissa, Riss or even Nelly).

ODFOx · 07/10/2024 13:00

Thebe or Hebe?

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 07/10/2024 12:59

I really like Thisbe. Hebe was on my girls' list too. I don't see why you can't use it. It's a bit out there but not a random made up name.

HotCrossBunplease · 07/10/2024 12:57

Thinking about the “Z” sound in Xanthe, would she consider Zelda? I know an 8 year-old Zelda, suits her perfectly.

Or what about Eurydice, if you’ve seen Kaos you’ll know it could abbreviate to Riddy, which worked well with that character.

Ariadne is fab too.

Beamur · 07/10/2024 12:51

I quite like Thisbe. Anyone with a lisp will really struggle to say it though!
Had to laugh at this. But I'm not sure you need to worry too much..
Thisbe = a life time of jokes about Ninny’s tomb and the chink in the wall.
Don't do it.
Unless of course you have a boy and you can double down and call him Pyramus

I actually like all of your names. I know a little Raphaella - goes by Rafi. Very cute.

HiThereSquare · 07/10/2024 12:50

I love Thisbe but it's quite out there. I'd be thinking Thisbe Thatbe.

People get used to unusual names quickly. I'd say go for it.

user2848502016 · 07/10/2024 12:48

I quite like Thisbe

Also like Xanthe and Romy from the list

CurlewKate · 07/10/2024 12:45

The problem with Thisbe is that very many children can't say the "th" sound at first. And it n places like Kent many adults can't. Both of my children would have called her Sisbe until they were about 7. And the majority of people in their school would have said Fisbe.....

Ruthietuthie · 07/10/2024 12:43

I LOVE Thisbe. I very much like all the other names, except Signe.

toastofthetown · 07/10/2024 12:41

I quite like Thisbe and it’s my favourite of the the options.

Xanthe - nothing wrong with it, but something about it just doesn’t work for me
Ruri - not a fan of pinching names from other cultures either, and will just be assumed to be a Rory
Romy - I don’t mind it
Raphaelle - too frilly for me
Signe - pronounced like Sig-knee? I don’t think that’s a pronunciation most would jump to. I just went on Forvo and couldn’t find a language where that seemed to be the pronunciation

LauderSyme · 07/10/2024 10:54

My first thought was "This be where dragons dwell" spoken in an olde worlde Cornish voice! Not that that would disqualify the name necessarily 😉

I think Thisbe matches current name trends pretty well and it sounds nice, with a similar vibe to Phoebe.

But people might not know whether it's Th as in thin or Th as in these, and whether it's S as in snake or S as in rise. I don't know either, to be fair.

I like Xanthe very much then Romy but not keen on the others. Also I wouldn't underestimate the challenge of naming pets!

Yes - I'm hearing a West Country accent - This be Thisbe !

Fraaahnces · 07/10/2024 12:34

Signe is not pronounced Signy but Signeh (eh is soft like the end of “whisper”.) not sure it translates well, but it means “Swan”. Thisbe “This Be” - no… Xanthe is great. Ruri is ok. People may expect Ruari/Rory. Raphaelle’s fab but a lot to live up to

SatinHeart · 07/10/2024 12:31

Xanthe is nice. Hebe would be a bit less 'out there' than Thisbe.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 07/10/2024 12:29

What's wrong with normal, human names?

veritasverity · 07/10/2024 12:28

Thisbe is a bit of a tragic figure! But then people still use Juliet so I guess it doesn't matter too much!
But I can see people taking the piss "and this be Thisbe", "This be or not to This be" she'll get no end of this type of shite, so I'd give it a swerve!

Newterm · 07/10/2024 12:25

I’d assume you were interested in the Party Wall Act

BodyKeepingScore · 07/10/2024 12:23

Hard no from me. Sounds like Frisbee.

This is an actual name an actual human will have to carry with them through life...

AlexanderArnold · 07/10/2024 12:23

I love Thisbe!

As long as Pyramus doesn't come back into fashion for boys!

MrsSkylerWhite · 07/10/2024 12:22

Romily?

PuppyMonkey · 07/10/2024 12:22

Same as PP, I’d just think “This be a lovely baby” or etc. Grin

VWAirbag · 07/10/2024 12:21

Love Xanthe.

I fear with Thisbe you’ll get a lot of MND quotes from everyone.

Nicebloomers · 07/10/2024 12:19

Most of those a bit inaccessible. Thisbe is very close to frisbee. Romy seems a bit popular. Maybe Romilly? The classic world seems to be a good place to look for something poetic, but a bit more recognisable

Corinna
Sybil
Minerva
Erinna
Hero
Ianthe
Calliope
Persephone
Ariadne
Gaia
Cosima
Nerida

Azerothi · 07/10/2024 11:08

It reminds me of theybe, the name ridiculous parents use when they can't decide if their baby's sex is male or female.
