I really love it.
Is it the pregnancy hormones? Or is it as great as I think it is?

Back in 1980 when at school a mate decided her future kids would be called Fabian and Sherocko. We tried to dissuade her in the way that 17 year old do. Unfortunately we lost touch so I don't know if she followed through or not.

My grandmother called me Duckie as a nickname. I loved her calling me that. It is a great NM. But not I think as a “proper” name. I’ve heard worse though. Could just about stretch to a middle name if you really love it.

Actually I'm right here watching my dreams get squandered.
Yours was the most unkind comment so thought I'd pop up and say hello.

I suppose I can surmise that Duckie is a silly idea. Genuinely wondered if people might think it's cute - obviously my family and close friends hated it but wondered if I'd just not polled a wide enough circle. But I hear you loud and clear. Quack - over and out x

I'm sure that you will come up with a great name for your child. It takes guts to come back to MN thread and admit your idea isn't so great after all. You have clearly demonstrated that you would have passed my student friends exam with flying colours. The ability to admit you were wrong is so valuable.

Maybe Dulcie instead?

BabyImaDoRight · 04/10/2024 20:15

Ductavia is beautiful, with Duckie as a nickname.

MrsSunshine2b · 04/10/2024 20:14

Can you imagine applying for a post as a solicitor, or a doctor, or any "serious" grown-up job with the name "Duckie"?

If you're a celebrity and your child has the option to fanny about in a creative field knowing the bills are paid if they never make it big, then you can call them something stupid.

I'm guessing that's not your position and your child is going to one day need to be taken seriously as an adult.

OP, turn off pretty in pink

There's been some corkers on here over the years. More recently Radeon if my memory serves me correctly and Jimberley.
Duckie rhyming fun: suckie, fuckie, mucky, nookie. It would be a bullies dream.

I love Jimberley!

For someone else's child, obviously 🤣

Thecomfortador · 04/10/2024 20:10

Yes sure, I called my son Pickle. Stopped when he was about 2.5, mind, but it worked well for him up to then.

The OP isn't coming back. Years ago a student acquaintance said she really believed that people should have to sit exams before being allowed to procreate. I thought at the time it was a harsh attitude. Then I see stupid ideas like this and think, maybe she had a point after all. I know in some countries a Registrar can refuse some names. Duckie is just so stupid and ctuel.

If you're a certain age, you might recognise this film.

(Younger readers, this character is called Duckie).

Call them Duckie as a pet name but christen them dobething more mainstream for their sake.

Duckie dobething, there's a jazz singer in the making right there!

ChampagneLassie · 04/10/2024 20:08

I toyed with calling a son Poseidon, luckily we had girls and my OH absolutely vetoed it. But I thought it was a great idea. We don’t even live near the sea or have any maritime connections

Years ago a friend who worked in Maternity asked a very young new mum what name she would give her baby, the mum answered Kyumi (not sure of the spelling). My friend said That's an interesting name, I've never heard it before. New mum replied It's the name of a deodorant on an advert on TV and I really like it!

oakleaffy · 04/10/2024 20:07

Oooh Duckie ! Look at the lallies on him!

DuckonaBike · 04/10/2024 20:06

Speaking as a duck, I often address my children as “duckie”, but they have actual real names as well. I would recommend this.

Aspecialplaceinhell · 04/10/2024 20:06

Are you rich and an aristocrat? Maybe!
Normal and not wealthy beyond our wildest dreams? Definitely not.

Newoldnameplease · 04/10/2024 20:04

My friend wanted to name her daughter Velvet. If I recall correctly, her DH's response was 'Fuck, no'.

Please don't call your child Duckie.

Can you see your child becoming Prime Minster with that name? If your answer's No, then don't use it!

LBFseBrom · 04/10/2024 20:03

Please don't. If you have a girl, you could call her, "Jemima", though.
