I really love it.
Is it the pregnancy hormones? Or is it as great as I think it is?

As some other posters have said, @magicstar2020, duckie is a lovely nickname, but not a good choice as the baby’s actual name.

If the baby is a girl, could you call her Jemima, after Jemima Puddleduck, from the Beatrix Potter books - then ducky would be a sweet nickname for her as a baby, but as she grew up, she would have a lovely name to grow into.

@Pickledpicklez
Spike is genuinely on my list. A close second to Duckie - I'd forgotten he was also a land before time dude. I wonder how spike would go down on Mumsnet I feel I should put it out there and find out....

Honestly it's my favourite film.
I did veto littlefoot quite early but I suppose I could consider peatry. OBVIOUSLY can't go with Sarah.

I say why limit yourself, you’ve got spike as an option? (Although he’s a bit slow isn’t he, so maybe not that) what about chompers from the sequel? Or the most normal, Ruby?

no YOU watch the TV series now 👀

Call your kid whatever you like.
My DS is friends with a kid called Dixie and I also met a women on a work conference who decided her name was going to be Toffee. I met another woman who had renamed herself after her rescue dog, so they were both called Malory.
I don't care what anyone's called, so long as I have a good chance of pronouncing it correctly and not embarrassing myself.

I remember a Chinese boy in my class called Duc, pronounced "Dook". But Duckie - no.

RedToothBrush · 04/10/2024 21:29

'Fuck a Duck'. Teenagers can be horrible.

PyongyangKipperbang · 04/10/2024 21:27

I live near South Derbyshire, "me duck" is a common thing to say. "You alright me duck?" or as my S.Derbs uncle once said to a server at a Spanish hotel buffet that had a big veggie section "is this bacon, duck?" and she replied "no, its bacon"!

Duckie is sort of a more affectionate version of that so no. That said, always had a crush on him in Pretty in Pink.

Have you been watching the land before time?

No it's not cute, sorry. I hate my name and really resent my parents for not thinking about it properly as we have to live with that name for the rest of our lives! It's not a fashion accessory

Betterthanitseems · 04/10/2024 21:26

Duckie is a nickname for Donald?

Pickledpicklez · 04/10/2024 21:24

BruFord · 04/10/2024 21:21

I suppose the question is would you like to be called Duckie? As a teenager, would you have liked to introduce yourself to people as Duckie?

I think it’s a cute nickname, but I wouldn’t use it as a baby’s official name. Chose something else and refer to them as Duckie at home.

CheshireCat1 · 04/10/2024 21:20

Henry V111 called Ann Boleyn’s breasts duckies.

Lovelyone1 · 04/10/2024 21:19

As a teacher it's not the craziest name I've heard
It's kinda cute lol ( . ❛ ᴗ ❛ . )

Emmanuelll · 04/10/2024 21:19

Noooo

NiftyKoala · 04/10/2024 21:19

If you do this school will be a nightmare for your child. Put your child first and don't make your child's life difficult.

SerafinasGoose · 04/10/2024 21:18

And even he was really called 'Phil ...'

Can I call my child Duckie?
bridgetreilly · 04/10/2024 21:16

How about Pet? Or Luv?

PadstowGirl · 04/10/2024 21:14

Well it's quite a nice regional term of endearment in the midlands. Be grateful you arent in parts of Lancashire or you might be naming your child "Cock".

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 04/10/2024 21:13

This must be a joke, but a rather good one. Thank you, Mummy Mallard.

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 04/10/2024 20:42

That's who I immediately thought of - but I'm pretty sure that even in the film, his real name was Philip and Duckie was a nickname.

Aww really, I don't remember that. Awful name but I feel strangely disappointed that Duckie was actually called Philip, feel almost cheated 😆

SeatonCarew · 04/10/2024 21:10

You can't imagine it being murmured in a moment of passion, can you?

(Nor does it pass my other test, could you put Prince or Princess in front of it?)
