Help to name little boy

Dottodotty · 02/10/2024 15:28

Little boy arrived 4 days ago, have a short list of names but struggling to get the final one nailed. Already have a little boy called Toby. What's everyone's thoughts?

  • Finn
  • Ted
  • Dylan

Don't want something mega popular if possible. Although I know most of those are top 20. Just not sure what that means in reality of number of boys with those names in class etc. Surname is Campbell.

I would have had Joseph if mine had been a boy

PadstowGirl · 04/10/2024 09:38

Edward is nice and can be shortened to Ted or Ned.

BootballJoy · 03/10/2024 13:34

Finn is a great name. All reasonable choices though (but Finn is far and away my favourite).

Agree with PP about popularity. We have 3 Louis in DD's Reception class and a different Louis in her nursery last year! The only boys' names I really hear absolutely everywhere are Noah, Oscar and Theo. And if I was choosing a name and liked one of those it still wouldn't put me off.

I love Finn and I think it goes well with Toby
Congratulations

Jessieshome · 03/10/2024 11:06

Calling a boy Ted is like calling a girl Doll, I think it's silly and always feel silly when saying the name of my children's friends called Ted (they both know a Ted).

Dylan pronounced the Welsh way is a lovely name, it's also nice the English way.

Finn is a bit 'meh' for me but goes well with Campbell. Sounds a bit like a politician though.

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 03/10/2024 07:19

Dylan would be the least common and Ted the most around here. Agree with previous poster that you never know what will be popular next, so go with what you like. Dylan then Finn are my favourite.

BoleynMemories13 · 03/10/2024 06:47

I love Finn.

I also really like Ted, but only as a nn for Edward (much preferable to Teddy). However, Toby and Ted is a bit twee.

Dylan is ok, but I much prefer Finn.

Please don't stress over popularity. It's impossible to predict which names will be repeated in school, but popular names these says are nowhere near as popular as popular names of the past as people choose from a much wider pool of names these days. There are far less children registered these days with the number 1 name than there are schools in England and Wales, so any duplications are fluke rather than inevitable and can happen to any name. You could pick a name outside the top 100 and there are randomly 2 in a class, or you can choose the number 1 name and they turn out to be the only one in their school. There's often no rhyme or reason to it. Name popularity can vary so much from area to area too so national stats can often be deceiving. What is really popular somewhere, may be quite unheard of the other end of the country.

bakewellbride · 02/10/2024 23:03

All are lovely and we were going to call our daughter Toby if she'd have been a boy so good taste 😁

Other names in the same vain:
Leo
Owen
Luke
Jamie

Of the 3 Dylan without a doubt. Like Toby it’s been in the Top 100 for a least 30 years - and has mostly had steady use so is unlikely to date badly. Ted and Finn have rocketed up the charts in comparison- even if you don’t know any now, you likely will in future. And also bear in mind (as others have mentioned) Ted might not look as popular in the stats yet, but a fair number of Edward’s, Theodore’s and Teddy’s will be known as Ted (it’s the new cool retro diminutive for boys).

Moreteaandchocolate · 02/10/2024 22:34

I really like all 3 names! I voted for Dylan because it’s the lowest popularity.

MsBaggins · 02/10/2024 20:55

Finn 100%

Was always on my list if we had another boy

RuthW · 02/10/2024 20:25

Dylan is nice.

Others are too short for me

shoopshoopdedoo · 02/10/2024 20:25

I like them all but would choose Finn, followed by Dylan. I think Toby and Ted together is maybe a bit twee, plus would only personally use Ted as a nickname for Edward/Theodore.

Interesting that people are saying they know loads of Finn’s - my kids are pre-school age and I’ve only come across one Finlay, and no Finn/Dylans. Every other baby boy is Teddy or Freddie though!

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 02/10/2024 18:50

They're all nice names. I'd go with Dylan - Ted is lovely but I'd avoid the same initial.

KirstenBlest · 02/10/2024 18:45

Most of the Teddys will probably be Ted when they're older.

I like Finn.

StampOnTheGround · 02/10/2024 18:42

Love both Finn and Dylan - either would be a great choice with Toby!

Not a massive fan of Ted.

KirstenBlest · 02/10/2024 18:37

Look up Finn and Finley (and Fionn, Finlay, Findlay, Finnan, Fintan, Finbarr ...)
Look up Ted, Teddy, Theodore and Edward.

I don't like Dylan unless it's the Welsh pronunciation (which was massively popular in the 1960s and1970s)

Notreat · 02/10/2024 18:37

I prefer Toby and Dylan or
Toby and Finn
I would avoid Ted with Toby as it sounds like a children's TV show.

Dottodotty · 02/10/2024 18:29

stickybear · 02/10/2024 17:25

I love all three, but there are so many Finns and Teds around so I would go with Dylan

Why do you think there are lots of Ted's. Do people use it as a shortened version of Edward and Theodore. I would have thought Teddy was a more popular nickname but I may be out of touch with current names in playground

ThatFlightyTemptress · 02/10/2024 17:15

Toby and Ted sounds like a kid’s tv show…so Toby and Finn.

caitlinsjoy · 02/10/2024 17:15

Are you pronouncing Dylan correctly? If not, Finn.

Monkeysatonthewall · 02/10/2024 17:15

Modern family ruined Dylan for me, voted for Finn 😊

ButterAsADip · 02/10/2024 17:13

Definitely Dylan for me! I like them all but know swarms of Finns, a fair few Teddys and only one Dylan. I think they’re all nice friendly cool names :)

BibbityBobbityToo · 02/10/2024 17:11

And, just want to throw in "Brodie" my absolute favourite that isn't on your list but would be fantastic with your surname.
