Thought on the name Aurora?

I feel like this is the right now for our second DD

DP liked it when we discussed it earlier in the pregnancy but now he said he's worried it's like a stripper name

I don't think it is at all, please let me know your thoughts?

I don't like it. I have friends and family who either say R as W or V, so she'd have been Owowa or Ovova.

It also sounds a bit like that gurgle at the end of water going down the drain.

But op the real issue is your DH doesn’t like it: you can’t really push on if he’s opposed despite what we may all think. Even if we all loved it ( and I don’t hate it) it’s not fair on him to band his dd what he feels is a stripper name , surely?

I think it's definitely a marmite name. I don't like it.

Someone we know has a granddaughter called Aurora, they don't like it but obviously don't say anything. They were expecting something more standard/boring as the sibling is called Dominic so quite different to Aurora.

This is quite outing of the family because as you say they aren’t names that often sit together! Are you sure your friend wouldn’t mind you saying online she doesn’t like her gd’s name!?

No it doesn't 😅😅

It does, it's an awful name.

If ya say so lol. Its a lovely name 😊

CrispieCake · 30/09/2024 14:11

The thing is... Even if other people don't "like" a name, they might like it on your child, if you know what I mean. So it's best just to focus on what you like.

I have met a tiny Stella, Nevaeh and Hector recently, none of which I would have chosen myself, but actually the kids just suit their names so much and now I think they're all gorgeous (both names and kids!).

Audrey is a classic - even posh - name.

I never watched Coronation Street so don’t know that character, but famous Audreys of course include Hepburn and Tautou. It’s becoming very popular in Canada.

Audrey are you taking the mick?

lololulu · 30/09/2024 14:07

Don't ask on here.

You will get plenty of people love or detest every single name out there.

As long as you like it.

Or ask your close friends and family who will give honest opinions?

Stripper
Drag Queen
Disney Princess
Scooby Doo's voice
Hard for some to say.
Plus the amount of northern lights we seem to be getting in the UK lately I'm sick of hearing about the blimin aurora borealis and constant pictures on social media.
The fact that your partner associates it with sexy dancing would be enough to put me off straight away!

Aurelia is so much nicer, in my opinion.

Scooby Doo’s voice! “aurRooo!”

RedRobyn2021 · 30/09/2024 07:32

It suits both IMO

I loved the name River when I was pregnant with my first and if I'd had my way, we'd have used it whether my DD had been a boy or girl. DP didn't like it though.

I think some names like Jessie and Alex suit both sexes

it means 'red king' so I disagree that it suits both.

Yeahnoforsure · 30/09/2024 12:33

I've given the name Aurora way too much thought lately, and said the name aloud to myself, and as on who can't say it properly, it sounds awkward and the emphasis is on 'roar' which takes away any flow the name might have.

Rory? Why not just name her Rory, since that seems to be important as a NN?

Too bad you don't know anyone named Audrey, other than Gail's mother, it's a lovely flowing name, and easy to pronounce. Or Aurelia.
Huh...even Borealis is easier to pronounce and has a nicer sound to me.

InThisWholeWorld · 30/09/2024 12:29

Dreadful name

Mugcake · 30/09/2024 12:15

I love it, if you do too go for it! Rory is a cute nickname and, as its popular, by the time she's an adult it'll be a "normal" name 😊

Katiesaidthat · 30/09/2024 12:08

I like it, just don´t like how it´s pronounced in English. This Owowa...shivers.

HowYouSpellingThat10 · 30/09/2024 12:03

I think a lot depends on your accent.

It's a name I can't shout - my friend has an Aurora. While this seems like an odd concern, it's not good feeling self conscious or internally wincing at it every time you need to leave the park.

I hate hearing myself say it if you have to raise your voice. Slowly and gentle is okay but when it's in the 'command' form I sound whiney. And with a toddler tone is important. But your accent may not be northern!

I'd test saying it in different ways as in 'my child is away to run into road, how do I say it's.

BobbyBiscuits · 30/09/2024 11:59

Love it!!!

Gigi5 · 30/09/2024 11:58

RedRobyn2021 · 30/09/2024 11:50

@Gigi5 makes me think of Audrey in Coronation street from years ago, you know Gail's mum?

Funny how these associations form

This is what Audrey conjured up for me too as a teen (alongside Deirdre - Barlow from Corrie), until I came across it in the instance above. The little girl in question has very cool parents and it transformed it for me. There's of course also Audrey Hepburn.

I agree it's very different to Aurora though!

It’s a bit childish imho

How about Audrey?

Old Anglo-Norman name meaning “noble strength”, lovely ancient etymological roots, surely due a comback? Get in early before it becomes trendy? It’s popular in France.

I love Audrey: it's our CEO's daughter's name. I think she's about 7 with French heritage. So beautiful and elegant especially so in a French accent.

Twee and insubstantial just like the Aurora Borealis!

Edited

Well yes the meteorological aurora are what you’d call insubstantial actually!

Hiyawotcha · 30/09/2024 11:25

I find it very difficult to pronounce. Not a reason not to choose it of course, but just chiming in with the others who have said the same. SE England with a reasonably RP accent.
