Thought on the name Aurora?

I feel like this is the right now for our second DD

DP liked it when we discussed it earlier in the pregnancy but now he said he's worried it's like a stripper name

I don't think it is at all, please let me know your thoughts?

I don't like it. It would sound ok here in Scotland, as we roll our 'r's. But I'm still not keen, as there's too many people out there who could make it sound ugly.
I like Ophelia, Audrey and Aurelia.

RogueFemale · 05/10/2024 00:57

Aurora is fine if your entire circle of family and friends, and Aurora's future friends, family and colleagues, speak with received pronunciation. The idea of the name is romantic - princess, dawn, Disney, - but the reality will be people shortening to Roara or Rara or whatever.

frozenblueberries · 05/10/2024 00:52

I also love Alora

ForgotwhatIcameinherefor · 05/10/2024 00:48

I cannot pronounce r's well and used to have a GP named Doctor Aurora
"Doct-or-or-or-a"Confused

I want to love it but it’s just a bit of a mouthful and I find it difficult to say. It just doesn’t roll off the tongue very well.

Love the suggestion Aurelia that is a gorgeous name.

ForgotwhatIcameinherefor · 05/10/2024 00:43

Another vote here for Auralia Star

Mmhmmn · 05/10/2024 00:38

Nah it’s a bit fussy, both speaking and sound-wise. And people will think it’s Laura said in a weird way.

RogersOrganismicProcess · 05/10/2024 00:32

It is as ’posh’ as Juicy Couture.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 02/10/2024 21:09

It's lovley and posh and incredibly popular and can be Rory for short

Posh? No.

Is it posh? I didn't think so.

No it doesn't 😅😅

Areola is exactly what it makes me think of too: see upthread. So with respect I think it really does.

Isn't it Ow-rora (ow like in now) in Spanish? The Rs probably sound better in Spanish.

I assume so if my Hispanic friend Laura is pronounced L-ow (as in now)-ra.

Love it! I have a Spanish friend with that name.

Hannahspeltbackwards · 02/10/2024 10:28

I like it.

Reminds me of a book I read as a child called "Hello Aurora".

I've always thought it sounded pretty.

I have heard it mentioned lots of times in forums, but never actually come across any in real life.

Don't ask on here.

You will get plenty of people love or detest every single name out there.

As long as you like it.

Or ask your close friends and family who will give honest opinions?

You do have to think of the child going through school and adulthood with the name, it's not like naming a pet!

Family and friends don't always give honest opinions as they don't want to hurt their loved ones feelings.

sel2223 · 30/09/2024 18:34

Whatever MN posters think of the name is pretty irrelevant, what matters is that you and DH mutually agree on a name for your child.

If he vetos your favourite or vice versa that's just the way it goes but you'll eventually agree on the perfect name for your baby.

My DH has vetoed several names which I adore but there's nothing I can do about it as it's a mutual decision - I'd certainly never choose a name he disliked (or likened to a stripper name OMG) just as I wouldn't expect him to run off and register our baby with a name I hated while I was still lying in the hospital. Can you imagine!

Yerdawasasausagemaker · 30/09/2024 17:59

say it quickly and you just get scooby doo’s voice 🤣

for that reason alone it’s a huge no

The thing is... Even if other people don't "like" a name, they might like it on your child, if you know what I mean. So it's best just to focus on what you like.

I have met a tiny Stella, Nevaeh and Hector recently, none of which I would have chosen myself, but actually the kids just suit their names so much and now I think they're all gorgeous (both names and kids!).

Yes I totally agree with this

I've met a Fergus and a Stanley, would never have picked these names but the children are just lovely and the names really suit them, it makes me feel differently

I don't actually think there are many "horrible" names, you'd have to try quite hard

I don’t think she is . I think of Audrey Hepburn who is pretty much the epitome of elegance.

Yeah, I said above I love Audrey too.

It also sounds a bit like that gurgle at the end of water going down the drain.

But op the real issue is your DH doesn’t like it: you can’t really push on if he’s opposed despite what we may all think. Even if we all loved it ( and I don’t hate it) it’s not fair on him to band his dd what he feels is a stripper name , surely?

Yeah, if my husband said this I'd have the name ick - which mine often gave me by saying his connotations of names I suggested.

It's so annoying when they hate something we love. I speak from experience. We took a long time to agree - not until after our DC was born!

MakingMeThink · 30/09/2024 17:01

This is quite outing of the family because as you say they aren’t names that often sit together! Are you sure your friend wouldn’t mind you saying online she doesn’t like her gd’s name!?

Lol. They're not my friend, just someone I know. If they don't want me repeating it, then they shouldn't tell someone that's just an acquaintance. 🤷‍♀️

… though I guess that just goes to show we are very influenced by the people we know who have carried a name.
