As the title says would really appreciate no one being too savage. I am asking for opinions but be gentle with me.
36 weeks pregnant with my third baby , first boy. With my girls I just knew their names nothing and no one could of swayed me but this time I'm struggling
There's one I LOVE but it is quite unique so that's what holds me back but then I think I look on this thread daily currently and in 20 years time when he's an adult his name is not going to stick out.
Surname one syllable Irish name.
Rocky
Sydney ( definitely spelt this way)
Phoenix
Harrison ( would like this as middle name to Rocky)
Sonny ( becoming really popular near me )

Thanks in advance

Have you considered Jamieson?

searockssalt · 25/09/2024 16:52

Rocky - D-list boxer
Sydney - nah
Phoenix - nah
Harrison - fine
Sonny - D-list boxer

CurlewKate · 25/09/2024 13:42

I honestly can't understand Sonny as a name for an adult man.

RedOnyx · 25/09/2024 12:29

I also thought Sydney was the female spelling. Spelled Sidney it's my favourite from this list.

I used to know a cat named Rocky.

RuthW · 25/09/2024 12:13

Sidney is lovely.

Sydney is a girl's name.

The rest are not nice.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 25/09/2024 11:31

Harris and Harrison are popular where I am in Scotland. The other names are more for pets I think - Sidney is fine but is my friend’s dog’s name.

StudioCreate · 25/09/2024 11:26

most here now use Harris - it's morphed from arris. @SoupDragon

SoupDragon · 25/09/2024 11:21

StudioCreate · 25/09/2024 11:16

Harris is rhyming slang for arse.

It's actually Arris, short for Aristotle.

Rocky - dreadful even for a dog
Sydney - not the capital of Australia. Sidney is not too bad.
Phoenix - Arizona
Harrison - OK, prefer Harry
Sonny - ok as a nickname but not as a name.

I'd choose Harrison nn Sonny.

Harrison nn Sonny is a great idea 👍

CoffeeBeansGalore · 25/09/2024 11:15

Harrison is nice.
Prefer Rosco or Rocco to Rocky

steppemum · 25/09/2024 11:09

Sonny is awful and I really don't get why people like it. It is as pp said just a synonym for boy.

Of the others, I love Phoenix, but I do think it is a hard name to carry off, trying to imagine an adult male phoenix and it sound lieke someone in a rock band, as a nn, not a real name.

I think Harris as a shortening of Harrison is really nice, and Harrison is a great name.

Rocky - makes me think of boxing films where guys are macho and thick and so would not name my son that.

Sydney, as other have said the y makes it seem like a girls name.

I love Rocco and you could call him that and shorten it to Rocky. There’s a wonderful novel by Barbara Pym, Excellent Women, with a male character called Rockingham, shortened to Rocky. Rockingham would be a bit much though!

BehindTheSequinsandStilettos · 25/09/2024 05:58

Rocco and Sonny are becoming popular.
Harrison is standard.
Sydney is female.
Phoenix I've seen for a girl only.

Rocco Harrison is fine
Sullivan a pp suggested is nice
Shamrock with your baby

Makelikeatreeandleaf · 25/09/2024 04:38

Do I like Rocky Harrison? No.
Do I think you should use it if you love it? Absolutely.
Sydney definitely the female version, don't make his life difficult. I've spent 50 years correcting the spelling of my name and it's very tedious.

Jenasaurus · 25/09/2024 03:55

Jenasaurus · 25/09/2024 03:53

as long as your surname isn’t Road I would go with Rocky x

Although the only 3 Rocky’s I know of are Sylvester Stallone, the British man that took Jay slater to the BnB and a friends Alsatian

Jenasaurus · 25/09/2024 03:53

mathanxiety · 25/09/2024 03:46

Sydney is the way all the girl Sydneys I know spell their name. Sidney is the boy version.

The only names I like from your list are Phoenix and Harrison.

Needanewname42 · 25/09/2024 03:42

Another alternative to Rocky would be Ricky which brings to mind Nicky.
Rocky just sounds like a jokey nickname, not a shortened form.

Needanewname42 · 25/09/2024 02:57

Rocky - definitely not, sounds like the film, or a nickname. Maybe consider Rocco

Sydney - different but go with the traditional spelling Sidney, which makes it easier to shorten to Sid, Syd looks weird and reminds me of Slimming World Syns

Phoenix - different i quite like it.

Harrison - over used where i am 12 kids in a group 2 Harrisons and a Harris

Sonny - No very childish to me like calling your child Junior. What about Sammy?

AgileGreenSeal · 25/09/2024 02:50

Definitely not Sydney (the female spelling) for a boy, please - he will be forever trying to correct spelling mistakes!

If I had to choose one of that list it would be Harrison, by a mile especially with a one syllable surname.

Remaker · 25/09/2024 02:48

I live in Sydney, know 3 children called Sydney and they’re all girls.

Your taste is different to mine but I think Harrison is ok. There’s an Australian footballer called Harris Andrews, I think that’s his full name not Harrison. I’m not generally a fan of surnames as first names but I don’t mind it.

mrssunshinexxx · 25/09/2024 02:38

@Jessieshome I'm thankful I've not been battered over it ! Everyone has different tastes and I'm really taking my time going back and forth to make sure we land on the right one for him

We would use Harris as short for Harrison , not Harry. Sorry maybe should of mentioned

The Sydney spelling is normally used for a girl, so if you use it you will be letting your son in for a lifetime of people misspelling his name or assuming that he is female.

Sonny is cute when they are a toddler, but less cute when they are a six foot four hairy chested, bearded lumberjack!

Harrison isn't too bad.
