Thoughts on Wesley (wes)

I've only just found out I'm pregnant with baby number 3, we have two boys and I'm assuming the 3rd will also be a boy.
I've always liked the name Wesley nn Wes but I can see from old threads some people think it would be cruel, is it really that bad? We live in New Zealand where the names not common but not unusual.

Thanks 😊

I really like it. Only ever met one, we went to school together and you could not have met a nicer chap.

Congratulations on your PG Wink

NashvilleQueen · 22/09/2024 17:57

Apologies to those that have a Wesley. If any consolation my children have names that are often disliked on here!

NashvilleQueen · 22/09/2024 17:56

It was around when I was at school. I don't like the sound of it. And I don't like 'Wes' as a nn.

MooseBreath · 22/09/2024 17:53

I have a Westley (NN Wes). We have had very mixed opinions, but I love the name and so does DS. Have yet to meet another one! I quite like Wesley as well, but we named DS for The Princess Bride character.

Congratulations!

Oganesson118 · 22/09/2024 17:21

I actually really like it but my granny used to call Christmas tree baubles "Wesley bobs" and I can't get that out of my head either.

Kiwiburgh · 22/09/2024 17:20

Thanks everyone for taking the time to reply :)
It is very true that a name can be tarnished from experience., i work in corrections so some names are completly ruined now :( The only wesley I've know was a little cutie who was in the same day care class as my son.
For those saying I might not have a boy I'm 100% aware of that, I'm just going with my gut feeling.

I think of Wesley as being of the same era as Wayne. I’ve taught Wesleys and Waynes in the same era.

Wesrad2015 · 22/09/2024 17:02

@Calliopespa no offence taken. Everyone has their own likes/dislikes but for us he was Wesley before he was born and we have never thought any different on the name. I am sure there are plenty of names out there that I would turn my nose up at.

To be honest it was lovely to see the OP even considering this name as you don't hear it much. So if if you love it OP go with it if you do have another boy 👦🏼

Really? I think of Wes Morgan, the handsome footballer first. Isn't it odd how we see names so differently dependent on our experience. My DS has a name that is regularly described as "chavy" or a "naughty boy name" on MN but again, I think of some extremely good role models with the name - they seem ignored by a lot of people because again, they are Jamaican.

Yes name impressions are definitely something that are heavily dependent on your previous experiences of knowing people with them. In particular, once you’ve known a dog by a certain name, you can never unhear it as a dog name - even if, objectively speaking, it’s a lovely name.

I think, though, that’s why these threads can be interesting as it opens your mind to other views of names.

Hoolihan · 22/09/2024 15:24

You wanna see the state of our Wes!

Yes I think if it as that age group and perfectly nice sort of guy but maybe a bit geeky? Definitely not a looker. Maybe that’s just me …
It also looks, at first glance, like Weasley to me.

Haha! Yea that's definitely the sort of Wesley I know 😂

muddyford · 22/09/2024 14:17

The nice young man who delivers our newspaper is Wesley.

Guavafish1 · 22/09/2024 14:16

I knew a child called Wesley growing up

Manyshelves · 22/09/2024 14:14

Great name!

Uncommon without being weird

Alectoishome · 22/09/2024 14:13

My son has a friend called Wesley, nn Wes. I think its a great name.
With responses on here, you have to allow for the solid 35% (minimum) of Mumsnet who think that anything other than Christopher, William, Sophie, Charlotte etc is not a nice name.

We have an 8 nearly 9 year old Wesley and even 9 years on I still absolutely love the name ❤️ and would never consider it being anything else. He has plenty of nn with it Wes, Wessers, Weserly and even WW by his nearly 2 year old brother ❤️

He is named after The Princess Bride character which was my favourite film growing up, although that was Westley which I wasn't so keen on.

He is the only one we know of so I guess it isn't very common nowadays but I wouldn't change his name for the world.

Aah sorry op. I posted before seeing someone had a young Wesley and now feel bad.

Truthfully you make these names what you them to be by having the courage to use them on a new person who inhabits them. I’d maybe think very differently if I knew a young Wesley.

I know one Wesley. 50 odd year old man

No

VoteLabour · 22/09/2024 13:59

Wes Streeting - Wikipedia

I don't particularly like it, but it's not awful. I'd expect a Wes to be the same age as Darren and Gary.
Leslie is nice but not much used now.

RuthW · 22/09/2024 11:25

Ok for an over 50 man. Not a baby.

Enko · 22/09/2024 08:10

I like it a lot. My 3rd is the opposite sex to no 1 and 2

Tintackedsea · 21/09/2024 23:54

@JordanCatalano4Eva

Is that Rogue Demons or...

Tintackedsea · 21/09/2024 23:54

As. You. Wish.

JordanCatalano4Eva · 21/09/2024 23:10

Sounds like the name of a rogue demon hunter 😉
