How would you pronounce Zana ?

RoseApp · 18/09/2024 18:38

My friend assumed people would pronounce her child’s name Zana like Zah-nah as in Suzanna but several people have pronounced it as Zar-na

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I'd say Zana differently than Zahne tbh.
If Zana is in fact German then it would be Tsana more than Zana.

Edited

It's sahne in German and means cream but is pronounced
ˈzaːnə

Lulu1919 · 19/09/2024 06:35

Zar na
Bit like I'd say banana

🤣🤣🤣

Everyone has an accent. And a non-rhotic accent is really very strong as it's such an outlier globally.

I knew that was a silly thing to say when I wrote it but I never know what my accent is, I’d say English but that could mean a lot of things!! I lived and worked in New Zealand for a while when I was younger and someone at work used to ring me up for no reason and say they just wanted to hear my accent. It was the first time in my life I realised I had an accent 😂

Dana is pronounced day-na in the US sometimes, I think that's why it occurred to me as an option.

I thought this but then thought that's just Americans and how they often pronounce things wrongly differently 😂

BarbaraHoward · 19/09/2024 06:14

CellophaneFlower · 19/09/2024 05:40

Can I ask why you think it would be ay though? I can't think of another word where ana would be pronounced ayna. Just curious!

FWIW OP I'd probably start with Zayna. I'd assume Zahna to be a possibility but not Zanna

Yes, me too.

GreenTeaLikesMe · 19/09/2024 02:42

I am guessing that someone with a rhotic accent heard "Zah-na" and thought, there must be a letter "r" in there.

octoberfarm · 19/09/2024 00:59

Zay-na, but I haven't heard the name before so could be way off!

Mikunia · 19/09/2024 00:25

rosesareredvioletsareblueaimverytiredandsoareyou · 18/09/2024 22:43

Its Zana, no r.
Its banana, no r.

I haven't said anything about R. I think you're confusing me with someone else

CellophaneFlower · 18/09/2024 23:32

rosesareredvioletsareblueaimverytiredandsoareyou · 18/09/2024 23:19

For me the a and r are distinct sounds, hence cat sounding completely different. Cat has no r sound, cart does

Down south our ar is the same as ahhhh (as in saying ahhh at the dentist, in case your ahhh is different 😂) . So if you heard us say cart, you'd think it more like cahhhht.

Which is why I originally said zahna but also understand the zarna.

OnlyWhenILaugh · 18/09/2024 23:25

rosesareredvioletsareblueaimverytiredandsoareyou · 18/09/2024 23:19

I know you include the r sound when saying cart.
But as we established earlier, you don't use the same vowel sound in cart as you do in cat. You acknowledged you use a longer vowel sound.
So, in my accent the difference in pronunciation between cat and cart is just the vowel difference.
In your, rhotic accent there are 2 differences: the longer vowel sound and the rhotic r.

You are still adhering to the convention that 'ar' represents a long vowel. You just add the r sound aswell

CellophaneFlower · 18/09/2024 23:24

Honestly I've said arrrrr so many times now, pronouncing the r like I'm guessing some people do that I think I've turned myself bristolian 🙈

BarbaraHoward · 18/09/2024 23:21

OnlyWhenILaugh · 18/09/2024 23:16

ar is a spelling convention not a vowel sound!
It's a way of representing a vowel sound. How it's actually spoken will depend on the speakers accent.
When I read aloud the word cart I say the ar as a single, long vowel sound.

This is close to how I say cart: https://forvo.com/search/cart/en_other/

Whereas presumably this is how you say it: https://forvo.com/search/cart/en_uk/

You can see why Zarna makes zero sense to some of us (although, been down this road, understand the logic, just don't agree with it).

BrieHugger · 18/09/2024 23:21

Zana, to me, would rhyme with Lana (as in Turner or Del Rey) which has the same long A sound as llama or drama or farmer.

Bath, to me up north, rhymes with Kath (as in Catherine).
Bath, to my southern cousin, rhymes with Darth (as in Vader).

Even if we all agreed on a way that made sense (not likely) the name is not going to sound the same in every accent anyway, so splitting hairs over the exact pronunciation is pointless!

Yeah exactly, that's kind of why I was saying aa, ah or just "long a" are better choices up thread - the form of the long a will vary from person to person. There's a Tara in my family and we all pronounce it slightly differently. (We agree on the R though Wink.)

Really in the case of Zana, it's short a, long a or rhymes with pay.

@rosesareredvioletsareblueaimverytiredandsoareyou At the start of this thread I actually thought you were bonkers but I am getting what you mean now. That's from me saying the words over and over in different accents and from what @BarbaraHoward has posted.

The way you've gone about making your point is very odd though and had you been less insistent and more informative, you'd have had far more success helping people understand.

I've been re-asked the same thing over and over so the replies have perhaps seemed insistent. 🙃

At no point have I!!!! I have said they’re different, I have said we pronounce r’s differently, I have said that ar makes sense to ME and that the others don’t work for ME.

I’ve said it many times now! This is exasperating.

It is you who has told me, even after watching the video, that I am pronouncing the name incorrectly.

urgh, enough.

I didn't watch the video.
I don't open random links, sorry.

But Bath isn't spelt Barth, Grass isn't Grarss, Castle isn't Carstle etc. @rosesareredvioletsareblueaimverytiredandsoareyou there can easily be an r sound in a word without it actually being there - see also girarffe

Ummm what?

Girarfe? Theres only one R
