Honest thoughts on Hazel and Rose

Hi all,

We like these two names (not together) but would like to know how they are received - I know it’s what we like that counts but I found it helpful in the past to use MN as a sounding board for a name as it revealed some connotations and unfortunate rhyming words we hadn’t considered!

I don’t love how popular Rose is but I also think it’s classic and timeless which appeals. But maybe it’s having a moment actually as it’s a common middle name. Hazel: I like the link to nature (not that it’s important we have that) and think it’s cute but also ages well.

If anyone has any other short (max two syllables) girl names you think we might also like I’d love to hear them! We clearly like a z sound going by these two names.

Thanks in advance!

Two of my all time favourites. I’d pick the one that goes better with surname.

Rose will become Rosie if you're ok with that

I know more Hazels than Roses. I love Hazel. Rose is an overdone middle name but nice for first. I’d go Hazel but there’s not much in it for me!

Hazel: lovely.
Rose: dull. I much, much prefer Rosa.

Me too.

I seem to be in a minority on MN of people who cannot stand the name Hazel. It just conjures up an image of a frumpy middle aged woman for me 🤷‍♀️ Rose is beautiful, as are Rosa and Rosalie. Or how about:
Daisy
Maisie
Zara

Hazel: lovely.
Rose: dull. I much, much prefer Rosa.

I love Rose! It’s very popular as a middle name but I don’t think it’s used as often as a first name. Not sure why, because it’s great!

Hazel is nice enough but not as classic and elegant as Rose, in my opinion.

JustDeserts · 16/09/2024 12:08

Hazel has a nice sound IMO.
Rose is overused as a middle name but OK, if a bit weak, as a first name. Might end up being Rosie, if that bothers you.

I don't like Rosalie or Rosemary but Rosalind is pretty. I like Ros as a diminutive.

MrsSunshine2b · 16/09/2024 12:02

I think they are both very pretty and Rose isn't common as a first name, only as a middle name.

My DD's best friend is named Hazel. It's a lovely name which suits her perfectly.

Jasmine is obvious suggestion
I really like Hazel, but not keen on Rose. I prefer Rosalie, Rosamund, etc to just Rose.

Rory17384949 · 16/09/2024 11:09

I like them both but especially Hazel, because it's less common. I know a baby Hazel, I think it's a lovely name that works for a baby and adult.

There is also
Zinnia
Primrose

Both have the Z sound
