My great grandma was called Maud and I always thought what an awful old name until the last few months and I’ve completely fallen in love with it!!

Maude Elizabeth
Maude Penelope
Maude Vivienne
Maude Jacqueline
Maude Isabelle

I absolutely love old fashioned names 😅

what do you think

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Berlinlover · 12/09/2024 15:22

It’s probably one of the ugliest names in existence.

MerryMarys · 12/09/2024 15:17

It's not that it's old fashioned, it's that it sounds soo harsh. Maud pronounced Mod?! Like Mold without the L....

I think Maud is possibly the worse name I have ever heard for a girl in the history of girls names!

But it's special to you, so if you like it you go for it!

One of my grannies was an Edna. An old neighbour of mine was a Clover. Sorry you dislike Maud so much. 🫤

Sorry OP I think it's awful. It's so drab and miserable sounding.

It is a little Moaning Myrtle if I’m honest! 😬

But I can see it fits the vibe of Ediths etc that are currently being revisited and the good thing about children is they are cute so that allows them to “ warm it up” as it were. Usually once you see a name on a Dc or someone you know, you don’t think about it so critically.

I agree with your original view tbh. A very dated name, that I wouldn't expect a child born now to be called.

Sorry

I had a great aunt Maude, seems that sort of name to me. Makes me think of Hinge and Bracket singing 'come into the garden Maud'.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 12/09/2024 13:00

I know a five year old Maud...it's on its way back...

CookieMonster28 · 12/09/2024 13:00

I like it but prefer it with the e! Think it feminises the look of the name with the e on the end

Calliopespa · 12/09/2024 12:57

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 11/09/2024 21:58

I’d use it with the E if that’s how your Great Grandma spelt it (that’s the point of honouring family). Very retro/hipster cool in the style of Edith, Sybil etc. Maude Isabelle sounds lovely (Isabelle is a nice contrast to Maude as it’s quite frilly/pretty and a bit more classic sounding as well as popular).

Agree all this.

I think the e softens it, moves it a step away from maudlin, and I also agree a soft middle name like Elizabeth or Isabelle pairs well with it.

HilaryThorpe · 12/09/2024 12:54

I do like it, but can remember that it often became Maudie.
Now I will be singing "Come Into the Garden Maud" for the rest of the afternoon. 😮

EngineEngineNumber9 · 12/09/2024 12:52

You say Maud and my brain thinks maudlin! For me it would be like calling a child Misery.

I really like Maud, preferably without the e.

Maud Elizabeth is lovely.

@MerryMarys , but on here they're 'gorgeous and timeless'.
IMO the first time I heard them i thought 'Oh, that's a bit different. Nice'. Now, like you, I think 'Overused and dull'.

I also think they’re overused and dull. Especially as they’re only ever paired with Rose/May/Grace. Boring!

I don’t like Maude, it falls into drab catagory.

ladycarlotta · 12/09/2024 11:37

I think it's sweet. My (lovely) great grandmother was named Maud but upgraded to Maude at some point so I think it would be fine to spell either way. If my cousin hadn't already used it for her baby it would be on my list.
Way, way back it was a diminutive of Matilda so you could go with that too if you wanted. "My" Maud had sisters Ivy and Norah, for further inspo.

rainingsnoring · 12/09/2024 09:42

I love the name Maud and also had a great grandmother called Maud (discovered fairly recently). If you like it @xxoverworkedandanxiousxx and don't worry about what some other people think.

Mischance · 12/09/2024 09:01

Maud or Maude (approximately pronounced /mɔːd/ in English), is an Old German name meaning "powerful battler". It is a variant of the given name Matilda but is uncommon as a surname. The Welsh variant of this name is Mawd.

flatsevenup · 12/09/2024 09:00

I adore it but without the 'e'. Makes me think of Maud Gonne.

No because they are overused and dull

Maura is that like Laura with a M?

StamppotAndGravy · 12/09/2024 07:11

I really like it and it's on my list, but would use the European pronunciation Mowd. I like Maura too, which is slightly softer.

MerryMarys · 12/09/2024 07:07

Very harsh sounding! Like Ruth.

I prefer softer sounding names
