Of course, and in my first post I put that. Irish people would know and of course I would ask how it was pronounced and get it correct from them onwards.

Doesn't change first thought for most English speakers.

I'm not being mean, just honestly saying on a forum what I thought.

@Siblingnamehelp do you like any Irish names? Open to suggestion, they were just potential options none feel “right” just yet

I find Daithi and Donnnacha harsh and ugly. Dreadful names. Up there with Tadhg. Darragh is the nicest of the list in my opinion.

I'm sure there must be a nicer way to say this.

Thanks everyone, I do love Iarla and Callan (Irish & Scottish) , Don’t get the donnacha connections maybe when written out but when saying it I don’t get the connection

I like Donnacha but prefer Tarlach.
I like Thady but really dislike Theo.
Tiernan or Breifne are lovely too.

I just went back upthread to see if anyone had suggested Iarla, and saw that you'd originally liked it. I don't think it's difficult to pronounce - Ear La. It's a nice name to say.

I love Iarla.

I’m ambivalent about Callan, but would avoid Calan as I think people would pronounce it Kay-lan.

Well, so what, though? Most people won’t be able to pronounce a name in an unfamiliar language correctly until they hear it said. I have an unusual Irish first name and surname, and spent much of my adult life outside of Ireland, and while everyone I know obviously pronounces it correctly, I’m not going to crumble if a dental receptionist mispronounces it.

I have an Irish nephew Caolan who gets called Colon all the time because no one can pronounce it when written down..

Who calls him Colon? Fellow-Irish peoole?
