I don’t like a single boy’s baby name - do I just go with DH’s favourite?

I am a week away from my due date and I’m getting concerned that there’s no boys’ name that I truly love. I could come up with a shortlist of say 5-8, but I’d be about 50-70% on them. I’ve done all the apps, I’ve scoured the top 1,000 names lists, I’ve even bought a book. I just think boys’ names are all a bit meh!

DH has one name he absolutely loves. To the exclusion of all others. It would be on my shortlist but if I’m honest I’m not totally in love with it.

Do I just acquiesce and go with that?

A baby can definitely 'not look like' a name you love - we didn't go with either of our number one names for out 2 as they just didn't feel right on the day.
Best advice is not to rush - try a few out when he's born and it'll come clearer!

Daisybuttercup12345 · 10/09/2024 19:16

Yes I would go with his choice.

sel2223 · 10/09/2024 13:41

Yes, if he had a name he absolutely loves and you 70% like it (and have nothing you like more), then you should absolutely go with that name.

It would seem a bit spiteful to insist on a name you are both 70% with just so he doesn't get his way

You honestly don't have to be "in love" with a name. The baby makes the name! My ds's name was chosen for family reasons- I liked it (or I wouldn't have agreed). But I love it now and think it's the best boy's name ever-because obviously my ds is the best young man ever!

Pyjamatimenow · 10/09/2024 11:25

Yes. I was the same with dd2. There was a name I quite liked but didn’t love. Dh loved it so that was as close to agreeing as we could get. It’s all fine. She suits it. No regrets

Yes, embrace his favourite.

Runningupthecurtains · 10/09/2024 10:16

I'm on team babys don't look like a name - mostly, because I do associate certain names with a certain look (I'm slightly thrown by the blonde haired, blue eyed Hazel and Ebony I know) but how a new born/few weeks old baby look and how they will look as an older baby/child/ adult don't necessarily match. Lots of babies in my family are born with thick black hair but go on to be blonde kids and light brown haired adults.

2chocolateoranges · 10/09/2024 09:48

For me both mum and dad need to be 100% happy with the name or it’s not on he short list.

reabies · 10/09/2024 09:44

I'm the same OP, just don't love many boys' names at all. We have a DS and another on the way. DS was going to be something until I was about 38w, then decided I didn't like it anymore. Got lucky and found something we both agreed on before he popped out and I do LOVE it, but I haven't found anything since that's made me feel the same, and that DH likes as well. Both hoped for a girl this time only because we have a list as long as my arm of girl names we both like but struggle with boys! This one is due in December and we have 3-4 that we both like but neither is 100% on for various reasons. Going to wait until he comes out and see how we feel I think. Good luck naming your little one!

viques · 09/09/2024 23:16

Wait til the baby arrives, calling him Baby CreamC for a few days until you are sure of the name, or until one comes to you, is absolutely fine.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 09/09/2024 23:14

Love Benjamin 😍

DadJoke · 09/09/2024 23:11

Our rule for names was with that name surname could they plausibly be a rock star or an accountant?

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 09/09/2024 23:09

So long as you like the sound of it too (even if you don’t love it), then if it’s not a name that’s going to cause DS any issues in life (teasing due to a pop culture reference or sound, too dated, common spelling or pronunciation issues), then I say it’s fine to go with DH’s favourite. Maybe you could even look at it as a blessing that you don’t especially love any name, as it means no fighting over who gets their first choice!

I can’t see any issues with your name list - not all are to my taste (my fave would probably have to be Benjamin as I like very classic names rather than more trendy ones) but none are exactly uncommon these days or tease worthy.

Ixon · 09/09/2024 22:19

Babies absolutely do look like a name. A teeny Magnus isn't ideal. Or a scrawny Axel. The more traditional boys names can go to anyone. I think Benjamin is lovely. Benji or Ben as a nickname is gorgeous.

Breadandbread · 09/09/2024 22:14

Love Benjamin! In fact, I like all of the names on your list with the exception of Arthur, which I irrationally really dislike.

Seaside1234 · 09/09/2024 22:12

I pretty much chose our son's name, so when our daughter was born I went along with his choice, which I was maybe 80% on and had girls names I liked better. It's grown on me over the years, and it suits her better than my choices would have done. If he loves it and you don't actively mind it, that might be as good as it gets

Mandarinaduck · 09/09/2024 22:10

I think yes you should accept the name your DH loves and you are OK with. All the names on your list are nice.

Barleysugar86 · 09/09/2024 22:06

I liked Benjamin too, but in all honesty does anyone actually know anyone they'd call Benjamin day to day? It's such a mouthful everyone I've known has become Ben. I don't think you'd be able to stop it. Ben is fine but realistically that's going to be his name once he's at nursery or school.

longestlurkerever · 09/09/2024 22:05

I think the fact your husbus so keen means it's a strong contender. I'd be gutted if I had my heart set on a name and we ended going with something mydh didn't feel anywhere near as strongly about.

dontforgetme · 09/09/2024 22:00

Oh I love Benjamin!

WorkCleanRepeat · 09/09/2024 21:58

I'd go with it if your husband is 100%.

I was like you but with girls names. My daughter is now 8 and I still don't know what I want to call her!

Jinglesomeoftheway · 09/09/2024 21:54

Benjamin is such a classic, and hardly used these days. Love it!

I love Ralph and Arthur from your list. Not keen on Joshua.

Of them all, Joshua only just scraped on! 😅

TheBers2024 · 09/09/2024 21:43

I couldn't think of any girl names to be honest. They were all too loaded or used by people it would have been weird to name mine by.

I think wait and see what feels right when he arrives.
