Lola

spanishsenorita25 · 08/09/2024 08:49

So following on from my other tread, having done some research it seems Lola is used quite a bit in Spain. Not used as much as Sofia or Lucia.
There is also some different meanings out there and positive meanings not just "woman of sorrows". It's really growing on me and rolls off the tongue.

What are your thoughts on Lola?
Does it sound Spanish enough?
What is your favourite out of Lola, Lucia or Sofia? And which would you pick?

Thank you.

Terrible. Never understood the popularity of it in the early 2000s thought it had died a death. Surprised it’s still being used. Has seedy undertones and is insubstantial and unprofessional. Odd choice,

Marble10 · 23/01/2025 23:09

I love Lola and didn't realise it was Spanish until now. Even though I knew a Spanish girl called Lola, it never crossed my mind it was actually a Spanish name.

bluebalou · 23/01/2025 21:44

Might sound cute for a baby , but not when they are older.

Eenameenadeeka · 23/01/2025 21:44

It's more of a nickname to me, or a name for a puppy. I'm early 30s and definitely think of the song as well. But there's no name everyone loves, so if you love it then that's the main thing.
I know a Lucia who has the nickname Lulu, which is quite cute but still has a less cutesy name for when she's an adult.

Lyn348 · 23/01/2025 21:37

I like Lola, but it does get me singing L-O-L-A Lola.
I love Sophia (prefer it spelt that way), like Lucia but so many ways to pronounce it.

KayEmAy · 23/01/2025 21:33

I love Lola! I think it's fun and chic at the same time.

What's the biblical connection? Our lady of sorrows?

Just a google search, not sure if there’s anything further! I think the thread just shows how differently people perceive names. I wish I’d realised my DD’s name was ‘common,’ didn’t think of checking mum sites, I just liked the name…at the time . She loves it though and wouldn’t change it now- as an adult!!

I realise this is an old thread but had to add ! I know a ‘Lola’ named from the biblical connection and ‘strong woman’ or ‘warrior.’

I grew up in Madrid and can confirm you won't (generally) get people making associations with the Kinks song. The strongest association would probably be with a famous flamenco singer from the 60s-70s, Lola Flores. However Lola is not usually given as a full name, it is a nickname for Dolores, and more common amongst older women, particularly in the south.

Ellyanne · 10/10/2024 22:28

Lucia is a lovely name. I am not a fan of Sofia, that one has got to be my least favourite.

I think of the Barry Manolo song too or Charlie and Lola but I’m older.
Its probably not that relevant what anyone here thinks, unless they are Spanish.
Lola is a nice name.

Barry Manolo? The guys with high heels? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

sunshine237 · 10/10/2024 17:11

Yeah the Lolita association would really put me off I'm afraid.

VenusClapTrap · 10/10/2024 17:04

I’m not keen on Lola. It’s just not a very serious name to me. A bit infantile. I much prefer Lucia.

YourMommaWasASnowblower · 10/10/2024 10:27

I prefer Lucia.
My child has a friend called Lola and my brain is awful for triggering songs when people say things that are lyrics from songs so I always get the ‘Lola, she was a showgirl’ song in my head whenever my child says her name.
Most people call her ‘Lo’ though.

TeamPolin · 10/10/2024 10:17

I know a couple of little Lola's. It's not that unusual in the under tens.

Tbh, the song association would bother me. But I love the Kinks....

Snugglemonkey · 10/10/2024 08:18

I think Lola is lovely and that you seem more drawn to it. In Spain people do not make the same connections.

Eyerollexpert · 09/10/2024 21:53

TheRozzers · 08/09/2024 09:15

I used to like it but there is

  • the Lola song
  • Charlie and Lola - whiny voice
  • 100 dogs called Lola
  • too much tongue usage required with all those Ls

So it's a no from me

My DGD is Lola, when talking about name before she was born I said my colleagues dog is called Lola.
She is now 6, sass on legs and so energetic, bubbly and funny, she is definitely Lola.

sadeightiesthrowback · 09/10/2024 21:37

I like both Sofia and Lola, both soft sounding feminine names.
Lucia not quite as much.

GingerSquid · 09/10/2024 21:30

What’s the Spanish connection? Are you moving here? Lola isn’t actually used that much in Spain on its own, it’s a nickname name. I asked a Spanish friend about the name, as we have a young relative in the UK with it, and she thought it was more appropriate for pets. Lola is more commonly used in areas like Malaga, where you see informal names. If you are moving to an upscale part of Madrid for example, something like Clara, Alba, Sofía would be much more in keeping. My kids are at private school here and it’s all Jacabo, Alma, Iago, Hugo and the three above .. classic feel.

CurlewKate · 05/10/2024 08:06

Sorry- too babyish for me. My Spanish heritage neice is called Miranda and that seems to work if that's any help to you. It's shortened to Mira sometimes.

fedupoftheheatnow · 08/09/2024 10:40

I don't think you can speak for everyone I'm 30 and first thing I thought of was The Kinks song

Same. I’m a little older than you, but these songs are extremely famous and enduring. Particularly The Kinks! The songs and connotations have not fallen into obscurity.

I would find the endless number of dogs called Lola quite off putting too.

StickyStones · 09/09/2024 01:44

It's a dogs name

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 09/09/2024 00:09

Maybe Lola could be used as a nn for Louisa/Luisa? (which is a classic that’s used in most countries, so travels well)

I must admit I find Lola a bit nickname-like on its own, and the Manilow song instantly plays in my head, followed by the Kinks but that might not be as relevant in Spain. Do you speak Spanish OP? You might be better off asking on a Spanish site.

Of your 3 choices I’d probably go for Sofia.
