We like both, partner prefers one I prefer the other can't decide

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Rory17384949 · 07/09/2024 20:04

I prefer Lucy

smallsilvercloud · 07/09/2024 20:00

I prefer Katie

Releasethebat · 07/09/2024 19:59

I wouldn't go with Lucy because of Lucy Letby. It's the first thing that came into my mind.

They’re all awful! It’s clear your taste is different, maybe don’t join a thread where your idea of nice names is clearly very different!

I agree. All awful names. Everyone has different tastes, and OP asked about 2 specific names. Weird to then list off a load of random ones .

What a stupid comment. How am I supposed to know that the names I like are clearly different. Did it make you feel good making such a snotty comment.

It’s not snotty, you’ve listed clearly very different names! Surely you can see that Cassandra for example is not similar at all! Your suggestions sound a lot more snotty than the ones the OP asked about!

oddgirl · 07/09/2024 19:54

I love the name Kate and called my daughter this. She was a Katie when little but at 17 prefers Kate. There are no other Kates in her year.

BatsInSpring · 07/09/2024 19:10

Lucie

It's a pretty spelling but the poor girl will end up having to spell her name out for the rest of her life. Imagine how tedious that is

Neither Both too common. Go for something original.

Neither Kate nor Katie were in the ONS top 100 list for England in 2021, which was the last list I could find.

I was about to reply saying the same! All of those are awful 🤣

The OP didn't ask for random name suggestions anyway, she asked if people prefer Lucy or Katie. Why is that so difficult for some people?

Camilla, Cassandra, Annalise, Felicity, Cecilia, Sylvie…. So many lovely names which are not so common.

CrazyCatsandIcecream · 07/09/2024 19:46

I hate Lucy, sorry op. I just think of juicy Lucy goosey, no idea why as most names do rhyme with other words! It also doesn't help with Lucy letby all over the news atm.
Kate I prefer to Katie.

We had Lucy and Kate on our list. We went for Kate in the end as it sounded less babyish than Katie…. People have called her Katie in the past. She’s 11 now and has always been good at putting people straight 😂… It happens less now she’s older which confirms to me that Katie is a childish name.

We’ve never come across another child Kate.

Clearinguptheclutter · 07/09/2024 19:41

voted Lucy but like both

i prefer Katy to Katie and ideally as a shortening for Katherine

This.

There's nothing intrinsically wrong with using this type of very well known and universally a acceptable nickname as a full name, I wouldn't because only having a fairly "sweet" pretty nickname without it being short for a name which isn't a pet form (Katherine, Katrina etc.) feels somehow like treating the baby as a forever child, a sweet, frivolous, adorable but not terribly important pet...

Also people will ask her throughout her life whether it's short for Katherine or Katerina, or if she's"really" called Kate or Katie etc...

No they won’t 😂

I know 4 Katie’s and have never asked them this!

My dd is called Kate and I have only been asked this once. I simply said no.

Like what ‘Nevaeh’ 😂

CookieMonster28 · 07/09/2024 19:38

Not my taste but I doubt my favourite names would be your choice either!

Tristar15 · 07/09/2024 19:38

Both were on my list but I ended up not using either! I think Lucy has the edge, it would likely be my first choice if I ever had another.

Ooh I love both. Eek, I wouldn't know how to decide. I'd probably choose Katie, just because I have always adored that name. And then hope to another baby girl and call her Lucy Smile

rainsofcastamere · 07/09/2024 19:25

I'm a Katie. I'm not cutesy in fact I'm the exact opposite. Majority of people other try an immediate family call me Kate. I'm 41.

sel2223 · 07/09/2024 19:19

Funny reading these replies, the only Katie's and Lucy's I know are adults 35/40+ - all professionals, in their field. I've never once thought they've got a cutesy name, or that they're a forever child. Nor have I ever felt compelled to ask them if 'that's their real name'.
Aren't people odd.

To me, they're both fairly classic, inoffensive names that will grow from baby through childhood into adulthood.
