Got this into my top 3. Just curious of how people would pronounce it, is it “REE-ON”

Cotswoldmama · 05/09/2024 17:20

I've never heard of the name do would guess at rio-gun rhyming with Logan.

MidYearDiary · 05/09/2024 17:17

I think the issue it's unfamiliar to many, and if you removed the 'h', it would be pronounced 'Ree-o-GAWN', and I think people might default to that, anyway?

BarbaraHoward · 05/09/2024 17:12

I'm Irish and have never seen it before, but would guess Ree-awn (and would also guess that there should be a fada on the i).

There's lots of lovely Irish names out there, if you're not familiar do check them. I'm from Dublin and live in NI and have come across some howlers as people just don't have the knowledge of the language.

Notreat · 05/09/2024 17:07

I would guess ree-an. But I would ask how it was pronounced and go with that

AgnesX · 05/09/2024 17:05

Re-ann.... Along those lines. You've not got a hope in hell of ever having it pronounced or spelled properly.

KirstenBlest · 05/09/2024 17:01

It's Ríoghán. Rían is a boy's name and more like Ree-an, and Ríoghán a girl's name.

Rhian is Welsh and a girl's name and is pronounced whichever way you like hence Jimberley comment. RHEE-ann if you're Welsh, not Ree-un and it means maiden/young woman. Not in any way related to the Irish names.

YeahComeOnThen · 05/09/2024 17:01

Very badly indeed!

if I HAD to say it & had no opportunity to look it up first yhen

actually, I just looked it up and I'm astounded, that the way I'd say it is what they said. I NEVER get it right & can't even say most Irish names when I'm told how they're pronounced.

Gobsmacked (can't think of a more 'adult' expression.

@Babyboyno2 I love it. It's easy to say & I love how it looks.

I read it a rough-an but obviously knew that wouldn’t be correct. Ree-on is perfectly easy to remember and doesn’t sound unusual. Rhian, Ryan are perfectly mainstream.

Babyboyno2 · 05/09/2024 16:04

Never heard of it but going by google “re-on” but could be Ryan , just seen it @WildCats24

sel2223 · 05/09/2024 16:03

I would butcher that - Rio-gan

I love the “ree-on” after googling a few more ideas “Rion” never heard of it before has anyone?

How is Rion pronounced? Is it similar to Ryan?

Rogan

Same , I really like it though actually pronounced like that or Rhee-on

Babyboyno2 · 05/09/2024 15:39

Thanks everyone seems like it might be a difficult one for others, also love Rian it’s just became very popular in NI

Readytoevolve · 05/09/2024 15:39

I’m Irish and have not heard this name. I would struggle with this and probably not attempt to say it unless I absolutely had to. It is a tricky name OP, but if you’re ok with that, the pronunciation sounds lovely.

ColadhSamh · 05/09/2024 15:36

You're correct. It has the fada á which gives it the gawn pronunciation. You are also correct that there should be a fada over the í.

Don't understand why some worry about pronunciation of Irish names. Other names from other cultures seem to be accepted with efforts to spell and pronounce properly.

MovingBird123 · 05/09/2024 15:34

I would just ask how to pronounce it. I know a few people with Irish names that look wild to an English person - I just wait to hear how to pronounce them, learn the spelling, then get on with my life. If you like it and it's meaningful to you, go for it.

Babyboyno2 · 05/09/2024 15:34

@CurlewKate i do know how to pronounce it I’m seeing how others would attempt it and if there would be much confusion

OP posts:
Releasethebat · 05/09/2024 15:30

There should be a fada on the i as well.

Leafer · 05/09/2024 15:27

I’m Irish and I’ve never come across it! I’d probably opt for Rían (Ree-an). Less confusing and a lovely sounding name

KirstenBlest · 05/09/2024 15:24

Jimberley

Rioghan Darcy is Reegan, I think but I don't know if she's Irish

Releasethebat · 05/09/2024 15:24

I think it's pronounced more like Ree-uh-gawn, but I might be wrong. Are you Irish?

Seas164 · 05/09/2024 15:14

If you're not sure, most of the other people who he meets won't be either. It's a lovely name, I'd guess at REEan, but as PP said unless you want to sign him up for a lifetime of repeating himself and spelling it out, go for another one.
